It has been a strange few months for Jeonia, to say the least. The stasis pod was opened, though escaping the fire of one psychic suppression placed her right into the frying pan of another, coming down originally on a world called Creusa, home of the Tenebrian Remnant, another equally efficient killer of psychics and those who were 'different' . Suppressing powers was difficult, as was hiding from the various 'moral purity' squads that routinely scanned Creusa's lunar industrial zone. Hope seemed lost, when some sort of storm transported her, and 2 million others to the remote world of Heras, where a new movement, called The Elysium Protectorate, has decided to set down roots. The protectorate is still governed by Cyrus Adonis, the former UNW interim governor of the planet, though his warrior have shown they do have a softer side, and so far have worked hard to ensure their new home is capable of sustaining everyone comfortably .
1:10 PM
Food has been very difficult to come by, and most of the city residents still cling to the ruined houses of the unfortunates who had once lived in Mytikas before, there is far more work than any one person could keep up with.
Avatar
Though it was a strange time full of deprivations, Mytikas was the new start she was praying for. She thanked her god every day for this chance. The god and faith that was the reason she had to flee her Homeworld in the first place. But now was not the time to question her belief. It was one of the only things that was left of her past. She repaired stuff and worked hard since she was a little kid, so building up Mytikas and its surroundings was her thing. But repairing was often enough problematic with spare parts being rare or not accessible to Jeonia. Whenever she could, she would help in the fields. This sometimes netted a bit of food, which at the moment was worth more than any credit. If only she could do more to help the people and her new home.

There’s a knock at your door, or rather the sheet of cloth partitioning your small area of the ruins from the next family. “Hey. We need a grease monkey down near the fields. Regent Adonis bought a couple tractors from some scavengers but we can’t get them going”
Avatar
"Hey there. Erm. Tractor you said? I'll… I'll pack my things and go there to take a look." She checked if everything needed was in her backpack. Took a bottle of water with her while praying that her spare parts and her skills would be enough to bring back life into those machines. She was nervous but again happy to help. While walking over to the fields, she thought about the regent. He is something else. Helping wherever he can. Something I haven't seen from regents before. When she reached the fields the asked the first person she saw. "Hello there, do you know where the tractors are that regent Adonis bought?" (edited)
Avatar
He motions for you to follow and he looks to be heading toward a pallet that has been covered in a thick tarp “Got two of them here. Ones going to be modified for construction duty for a while, going to be used to help crush and push some of the rubble. Other ones going right to the fields. Neither of those things are happening if we can’t get em running though”
Avatar
Seeing both tractors reminded her of her homeworld and her Grandfather. I hope they were a bargain, as they don’t seem to be too fit. And is that oil that is dripping out of one of them? “Well, they don't look too shabby. I will look into it. Do you happen to know if we have some scrap metal? For the one that is meant for construction works, we should construct some rudimentary pusher onto the front. Or else it won't be of much help there I guess. I could do that after they start to run again. Or someone else who is up to the job of modifying this tractor” (Should I roll for Fix? Else I continue describing how she inspects everything) (edited)
Avatar
(Yep lets get a fix/int)
Avatar
(Fix/Int = 7) (edited)

The plow is put together easily enough, and it looks to be study, but there's a problem getting it to mount to be vehicle without overbalancing it toward the front. "I can think of someplace to go where we might find some wrecks to take parts from, to keep the back down and bulk this out a little bit, but its going to be dangerous. I heard the scavengers talking about it"
Avatar
Well that was not as smooth as I hoped. But I got it done. "Dangerous you say? Do you know what could be awaiting us? Oh and you said "we". So I guess you would be accompanying me if we decided to go? So then, my name is Jeonia" She reaches out her still oily hand for a handshake. Dangerous he said. I am not brave, I am not a soldier. But before Mytikas I was risking my life just for being me. Now it's my choice and doing it would help getting more accepted. At least that's what I hope. And choosing not to go means either no food and no new homes. Or someone else has to risk his life for a task that was mine. No, this is my time to do something outside of my comfort zone. For a short moment she smiled. (edited)
Avatar
“oh yes I wouldn’t send you out to the Garden of Bones by yourself. Not even to the edge of it. I’ll talk to the myrnidon commander for this area of the city , see if I can scare up some transport and maybe some armed help”
Avatar
Still in her thoughts, she answers. “Well, a garden doesn’t sound too dangerous.” Suddenly she looked surprised, her eyes wide open, at the person she was talking with. “Did, did you say Garden of Bones? I may sound like I am living under a rock. Wich I kinda actually do, but with a nice curtain. So what’s dangerous about that garden? Oh I should add that, although I own a Monoblade Knife and a Laser Pistol I am not a trained fighter. The knife is actually a great repair tool. Well the Pistol. I do own it just in case you know. But I am quite good at dodging somehow. Those Bullies at the academy never hit me” Quiet Jeonia, stop the babbling. He shouldn’t think that your not up to the task. “No worries I am up to the task. Well I guess you wanted to talk to this Captain right? Maybe we should go someplace where we can get our ride” When this is over, I should definitely learn how to use that Pistol. (edited)
Avatar
"I can tell you what we know about the place, but it was already thirdhand by time I heard it, if you really want to know..." he leaves the question open and motions for you to walk with him
Avatar
Jeonia walks at his side. Grabbing her water from her Backpack and drinks some. She calms herself down with a breathing technique she learned in the Academy. With a calm voice she answers. “Well we can talk about the weather or the work that we still have to do in Mytikas. But I guess I will get to know why this place is called Garden of Bones, one way or another. And in the end it will be firsthand knowledge” (edited)
Avatar
"I'm Galmore, by the way" he says by way of introduction. "And yes, firsthand knowledge. Have your supplies? I expect we'll be departing very quickly if we can secure transport"
Avatar
"Hey Galmore! Yes I have everything relevant with me. Mostly because I don't own that much. But also everyone else does not have that much. So I am just making sure nothing goes missing, you know? Well, the one of the only things I leave in my room are my spare clothes" Wich I won't wear, as they are way to revealing. I should make new ones myself. Gilmore speeds up so Jeonia needs to sprint a little bit. "Hey, we won't need food rations right? I don't have any at home anyways. I guess we should get going then." (edited)
Avatar
He says nothing to those questions, and proceeds with you to what looks to be an armed camp, which is little more than tents pitched inside a cleared neighborhood block of rubble, the stones and debris piled up into rudimentary walls.
12:46 PM
"We're here to get some escort for a small outing, Just two or three soldiers. Recovering some parts from scrap out near the garden"
12:46 PM
The guard takes the information down and vanishes for a moment, before the gate opens and you're waved inside
Avatar
It’s sad to see all those old marble pillars and clay bricks crushed and piled up to form this wall, but protection is more important than beauty. And those soldiers seem so disciplined and organized. She quickly passed through the gate. “Greetings you all!” She said waving her hand with a smile on her face. “With some of you, it should be pretty easy to find what we need. Maybe we get some more so I could even help you guys, if you need help that is. And with the modified tractor you could pile up an even higher wall. Heh Heh” She laughed, trying to be funny. Turning to Galmore she says: “Well if you have a knack with that captain you could probably ensure that he sends some good Soldiers right? You know him right? Oh and maybe he knows the current situation in the garden. But those guys definitely look like they are up to the task. If you dont know him that well, I could talk to him.” (edited)
Avatar
"I'll go talk to him. I'll be back in a few minutes but I'm sure any of the soldiers here could tell you the same story we all heard about the garden"
Avatar
As Galmore enters the Captains tent, Jeonia looks around the campside. Well let's see if I can find that information myself. Maybe there is someone not to grim around here While looking around she sees a soldier that looks like he is in his forties and has seen some battles, but still has a smile on his face when talking to his comrades. This one seems to be nice. She thought, as she approaches him. "Hey there. My name is Jeonia. I am about to visit the Garden of Bones with some of your comrades. Do you happen to know something about the garden?"
Avatar
"I'll tell you the same story the scavengers told me" he says, offering you some water from his canteen. He gets up and indicates you should sit down. "I feel strange sitting when a lady is forced to stand. Never sat right with me, not even as a kid. Anyway, from the horses mouth, so to speak Hundreds of years ago, the city states allied one other time- moving against what you might call a titan, a being of supreme power, and monstrosity. He ruled this planet, and those around it. We never had its true name, the legends just call it "The Overlord". "The city states, at the height , with all its power, technology, and all the soldiers they could muster, marched against the overlord and his horde" "The battle was fierce, fought almost non stop over a month, as our ancestors clashed with him, and his woe machines" "In the end, the free peoples of Heras prevailed , the corpse of the overlord eventually going from a symbol of oppresion, to one of life, as nature began to overtake it. The ground there is littered with wrecks, both of its machines, and the bones of our own walkers, and warriors. Some say there are ghosts there, and I for one believe them. Most who return, if they do come back at all, are changed in horrible ways by the experience of getting too close to it"
Avatar
As he finished talking, Jeonia chokes on the water she was offered and coughes. He is joking right? But he looks dead serious. I wanted to repair tractors, now I have to steal scrap from ghosts. "You say people are changed after coming back? How?" Do I actually want to know the answer? "I think it's going to be hard to find some volunteers to come with us. Don't you think?" She smiles, trying to win him over to come with them. But as that is nothing she normally does it must feel kinda silly for the soldier. "Well do you know how to drive ghosts away? And if not, do you have some spare medical supplies? Those could be helpful I guess. I could pay for them too." (edited)
Avatar
"Hollow. Like their light has gone out. That's the rumor anyway. Supplies are getting pretty low, thats why we need this stuff fixed, and why, as you said, we're stealing from ghosts." The door to the command center opens, and two soldiers are accompanying Galmore. The NCO you're speaking with also gets his gear on. "Not letting a pretty young thing like you go into that mess alone. Five of us is plenty"
Avatar
"Thank you! I appreciate that." She says to the NCO she talked with. On her way, Jeonia looked up to the sky, praying that she wont become a hollow woman. "Yes, five sounds great. Way better than two" She readies her Laser Pistol and gets her energycells out of her backpack and into more accesible pockets. I hope I won't need you little friend. But by the looks of it I will. So you better work well, or else you'll become a ghost gun. As she reaches Galmore and the other two soldiers she asks carefully. "Do we walk or is there a real vehicle?"
Avatar
"We've got a cargo truck to take, one of the few that's got enough power in its cells to go far. If we're quick about it, we'll make it back on fumes
Avatar
"Maybe we get something to help in that regard too. Just lead the way." She follows them to the cargo truck. Well the Garden is full of horrific tales, but maybe it has beauty in its own right. And as it seems we need way more then just some parts for the tractors, to keep going and secure Mytikas. When the group is together she asks: "So did anyone of you set foot into the garden before?" (So if she can, she would use the drive to look outside and enjoy the landscape. And she would look out for everything potentially dangerous.) (edited)
Avatar
(Works for me) "None from our collective, nobody has gone far. Not exactly easy to get supply for a trip like that"
Avatar
"Well then this will be the first time for all of us. I thank you all for coming with us." And you totally dont need to protect me -.-' "If we.. After we succeded, we will have two working tractors, so chances for a succesful future rise. And I will keep my eyes open for every part that could be usefull to the troops. And I will happily help in keeping your vehicles working." Well, let's enjoy the ride then. Who knows if there is any joy on the way back. (I guess everyone is sitting on the loading area?) After those thoughts her eyes and mind began to enjoy the beauty of the land as they depart.
Avatar
Burrowing monsters have been sighted in the area most immediate south of the city, near the river crossings, the muddy soil adept at keeping them cool. Regent Adonis and his wife fought one days ago, and it seems that as an apex predator, it did not travel with a pack. After a few hours you come to the battle site, near where the river can be forded, the armored body of the creature beginning to swell with the onset of decay
10:09 AM
(I'll post a picture just so you know what they look like, but its very dead)
10:10 AM
Avatar
As the cargo truck got closer to the dead body, Jeonia asked if anyone had seen something like that before. Then gets told the backstory. "So you see, those things can be killed. But are there any signs that something else feasted on it, after it died?" Who needs ghosts when those things threaten your life? " We should be extra cautious, but I guess you are anyways." (edited)
Avatar
"We can stop to investigate if you want to"
Avatar
(Well of course. Who wouldn't love to investigate a corpse in the middle of nowhere with possible dangers around? ;-) ) "I don't know. It could be risky. But if we find fresh bite marks we know that something is around, something hungry. When I was younger, I loved watching documentaries on Interstellar Geographic. All those brave men and women that explored untamed wilderness. Those memories remind me of what we are doing now. " She looks around. " Well hrmpf, I guess you don't feel the same. I do have some first aid knowledge, wich doesn't qualify me as a biologist. But if no one is better suited I would investigate that corpse. Some lookout would be great. And before we jump of the truck we should check if there is nothing directly below us. I guess. " I hope I don't faint from the smell. I should not give that many commands, they know better what to do then I do. I hope it is the right decision to check the corpse.
Avatar
None of them seem to be in a hurry to poke at the downed beast, but the truck comes to a halt and the security detail posts up in a defensive circle, as much as a half squad of 5 men can allow, at any rate. Galmore takes his scanner and hops off the truck as well, walking over to the corpse with you
Avatar
Although her gut told her that it's a bad idea, her curiosity won. She walks infront of Galmore to check on the creature. This is definitely a big one. No one with a right mind would fight something like that in melee. "If those things would be edible they could feed a few people. Galmore what does your scanner show? Look over here I am not sure what that is." She inspects a wound that could be anything.
😄 1
Avatar
(Lets get a know/int for you, at a +2 with Galmore helping)
Avatar
Something with a beak has torn at the wounds already opened by sword cuts and gunfire. The tears are small, indicating birds or some kind of scavenging ground creature of far less than humanoid size
Avatar
phew This is atleast something. Nothing big took a bite. But these wounds. I wonder if the regent and his wife got harmed fighting this thing. Something I can ask him, if we ever meet. (If it has scales handy enough to be taken with her, she would take out her knife and cut one off. Putting it into some cloth and into her backpack.) "Thanks Galmore. So either those things only eat fresh meat or we are lucky and none other of those is in the vicinity. Well Soldiers anything moving out there? If not we should move on. I don't know how much time we need in the garden, but we should be back before it gets dark." Ghosts in the darkness, I would die and be hollow without them coming close (edited)
Avatar
(They'd be the size of a serving platter, so you could take a few)
8:06 PM
"I don't see any other activity" the squad NCO says. "Not looking forward to being here after dark, lets get moving again once the samples are secured"
Avatar
"Yes that sounds like a plan. Just give me a minute." Jeonia cutting of some scales from this beast looks rather obscure. It looks like they can take a beating. I need to test them later. Maybe they can be useful to us. She puts them into some spare cloth she has with her for cleaning purposes. And then into her backpack. "I am ready we can go on." They move back onto the truck and Jeonia starts enjoying the nature and landscape again. "I hope this was the biggest beast we meet today" She mumbles.
Avatar
It’s close to nightfall by time the truck fords the river. Distantly there is a tree, dozens of kilometers tall if not more, it’s top reaches lost in the low cloud. The land around it for likewise kilometers and kilometers out is swampy , and the truck is forced to stop for fear of being mired down.
Avatar
"Wow. Look at that tree. It is majestic. We could all fit into it an live there. Well, we could not completely hollow it out or it would die. Where does it end? In space?..." She continues for 5 more minutes until she says. "Why would someone fight a big battle here, with such a beautiful landscape that is risked to being ruined?" If I just had a notebook and some pencil to draw it. Someday I will climb that tree, or better fly up there to the branches. "It's getting dark. Was it planned that it takes so long? Mr. NCO, what is your name again? I guess we shouldn't enter the fields in the dark right? So we are resting here I guess. But your orders will be the one we are following." "Do we keep night watch in turns then? So who is my night watch partner?" She looks at the NCO. I hope they have some spare rations. Going to sleep without eating seems to become the norm. (edited)
Avatar
Small ration packs are passed out, and its enough , even shared to at least keep the worst of the hunger pangs at bay. "Two man watches over three shifts tonight, I'll pair each one of you up with a soldier, and since this is my detail, O
7:05 AM
I'll cover the double shift"
Avatar
"Thank you for the dinner! If it fits your plans, I would take the middle shift. I am used to shorter sleepdurations." After everything is said and planned Jeonia takes her place near the frame. She looks into the distance. Good night She curls herself up and tries to get some sleep. There better be no ghosts waking me up (edited)
Avatar
You fall asleep relatively quickly, and are gently woken three hours later for your shift. You see the NCO you'd made friends with is likewise waking for duty, .
2:13 PM
The night is cold and a bit windy, the long grass rustles on itself in the breeze, but you hear no birds or bugs out in the grasslands
Avatar
Jeonia yawns when she wakes up and has an imprint of her metatool on her face. She says way to loud. "Oh hey there, I hope you got some good sleep as well?" Before the NCO can answer somebody else reacts. "Psst, we need to sleep be quiet! " "Sorry" she whispers back. Now whispering. "It is a beautiful night, so quiet and dark. One can see every star. In such a night, a place so horrific like that becomes so peaceful. Do you think we are in danger? “ (I guess stars are visible and it's pretty dark) She tries to quietly climb onto the cabin of the truck to get an even better view. "Could you lend me a hand? I don't want to wake anybody. And you could come up too. "
Avatar
He helps you to the top of the cab and the view is a bit better, and more clear. "I don't think so. We haven't seen much out this way and the ground seems pretty dry. Not much to support life long term"
Avatar
"That sounds reassuring." She looks at the stars again. "Do you have family here?" She tries to have a conversation with him in order not to fall asleep and thus to get through the night watch. (edited)
Avatar
“Not here. No. I never got the chance to have my own. I thought I’d be out of the military after the civil war ended, but then the protectorate came around and they needed my skills”
Avatar
"That is sad to hear. But maybe there will be a better future here. Do you happen to know regent Adonis? If so, what kind of person is he?"
Avatar
"Never personally. Been to a few of the speeches though. Hes....his mind works on a different level than ours. Or seems to at least. Layers of concern I couldn't even grasp at"
Avatar
Well, so he is different then. Someday I will have to see for myself what he is like. But not today. "It's hard to meassure time from the stars alone when you dont know where you are in the universe. One time at summercamp, we were staying awake all night. Atleast we tried. Knowing how the stars move across the sky, I knew that I just had two more hours to go and just stayed awoke. I won that contest, but nobody was awake to see this. But nevermind. It was a pleasure to guard our group together with you, but I think it's time to wake up the next shift. Well atleast the one who is replacing me. Thanks for taking the double shift. But if you can't stay awake any longer, just tell me." Poor guy, only living to serve in the military. But maybe when he retieres there is a place he can call his home. (edited)
Avatar
(OH not just yet, notice/wis)
Avatar
(9, do I see dead people?)
Avatar
Something rustles in the grass 50m to the north of the camp and you see two yellow eyes, close to the ground, staring back at you from the darkness
Avatar
"Did you hear the rustling?" Jeonia looks around trying to find the source. "Do you see where it is coming from? Over there." She points at the eyes in the distance. "There, those eyes. How many do you count? I see one pair." Her hand glides down to her laser pistol. A move, shakier than anything else. And a move she hoped she doesn't need. She is also way more hysteric than she wanted to be. "Wait and see? Do you have a stone or something to drive that thing away?" Why just why, just go away or be a cute nice little thing.
Avatar
That set is joined by a second set of yellow eyes, a few inches below the first, opening slowly
Avatar
"Now there is a second pair, how many beasts are there? Please wake the others I will keep my eye on those eyes." *What can I do?... I know what I have to do, although it will give me bad dreams again. If I ever want to dream again I need to survive this. But how do I do this? The last time I did was so long ago. I.. I want to know how many eyes I will see. * (precog-0 Oracle- 0 1 Effort for the day used to get the answer to this question)
Avatar
you see only the four before you, nothing else lurking from the darkness a moment from now
Avatar
There is nothing new. It didn't help. I always neglected it and of course now it's not helping. I need to work on that too. If I ever see the sunrise, there is one more thing on my to do list. Jeonia shakes her head and breathes rhythmically. *Calm down and focus. * "Everyone awake? There are still four eyes watching me. Don't we have something to throw or like some light to look over there to see what we are dealing with?"
Avatar
The NCO is gently, and quietly, waking everyone up, and doesn't have time to do that, answer you, and also throw a rock
Avatar
Jeonia gets out her waterbottle. Let's see. She shouts holding her bottle ready to throw it. "Please go away, I don't want to hurt you." Awaiting its reaction. If it doesn't move, I will throw my bottle. (edited)
Avatar
It continues to stare, eyes never breaking their intensity or focus (edited)
Avatar
She shouts again. "I warned you, all of you over there. I am going to throw now. Back of I don't want to hurt you." She throws the bottle, not trying to hit but getting as close as possible. (50m is kinda far, although she has the higher ground)
Avatar
(Its def not going to go the whole distance haha, even from atop the truck)
1:05 PM
The bottle splashes into the grass, and this seems to be enough to make whatever it is flee, parting grass marking its route
Avatar
(yeah I thought so too 😄) phew "Whatever watched us is gone. Sorry for waking everyone up." *I need to get my bottle back tomorrow. And when the sun is up, maybe someone is good in analyzing footprints." "Who was my replacement again?" (edited)
Avatar
The two up for duty step forward and get their weapons ready, just in case, and before long youre asleep
Avatar
As expected Jeonia is plagued by nightmares. So her sleep is rather restless. She wakes up as the sun rises. It is visible that her sleep was not that good. "Did anything happen while I slept?"
Avatar
"Nothing, the watcher...thing...didn't come back either. We got lucky you scared it off"
Avatar
"Thank you, never thought I am scary." She laughs. "I guess it or they were as curios as I was. I am going to get my bottle now. And afterwards I would like to see if there are any footprints. I would like to know how many they were, how big and where they were heading. Sorry if I have a commanding tone." She looks to the NCO " If you have different orders, I will accept them. If not could you please help me find those footprints? Galmore, you and your scanner would be helpful too." Nightmares and now headache. I am so thankful that you are always by my side. She whispers a prayer, as she gets of the truck. Not waiting for an order of the NCO.
Avatar
"We really need to press on, we don't have the time for this"
3:14 PM
"Get your bottle, but we need to get moving, every day we waste out here is a day we won't have more food growing:
Avatar
Jeonia speeds up and gets her bottle pretty quick. "Your right. I am coming don't get going without me." She joggs back to the truck. "So how far is it from here?"
Avatar
“Couple hours. Maybe less. But it’s a straight drive back through the night once we get the parts. We can’t afford any more delays
Avatar
"Your right. I am sorry." Jeonia sits down and drifts into thoughts. This is my baptism of fire. Kujifunza. Kuishi. Kujenga.-Learn. Survive. Build up a place to live. This will be my motto for the time to come. On their way, she looks at the enormous tree again. Enjoying the beauty of the nature. After that she watches the landscape as they drive through unknow territory. Unknow at least for Jeonia. I both can't wait and am afraid to see Garden of Bones for the first time. Jeonia smiles at everyone who looks at her. Hoping to lighten the mood. (edited)
Avatar
The truck moves along at a medium speed, crossing a grassland growing increasingly wet and swampy, before it shuts off at the crest of a very large hill. Below is a valley, leading the rest of the way to the massive tree still a few humdred km distant. "I go any further in I'm likely going to get mired down in the muck we're on foot from here"
Avatar
"Isn't it dangerous to leave the truck behind without protection?" Jeonia asks while getting of the truck. She waits patiently for the NCO to go first and give orders. And ready to move as soon as the NCO gives her a go. Some people would kill for this view. This would be the perfect place for a tourist resort or recreational area for the people of Mytikas. Something we won't need anytime soon. Such stupid ideas. (edited)
Avatar
"Why, have you seen anyone else out here?" he laughs, as he finishes getting his gear out of the back
Avatar
Him laughing and making fun of her, makes Jeonia pretty uncomfortable. She tries to find a fitting answer to be funny herself. "Nooo, I did not." Except for Galmore, two Soldiers and Mr. Rude. I need to come up with something funny myself. "Don't tell me I did not say anything, after a sandworm ate our truck or a ghost, a Ghost driver takes our truck." She laughs, it's pretty fake. She waits a moment for possible reactions, then says. "I am ready to go, lead the way."
Avatar
Stretching out in the valley before you, vast, overgrown wrecks of walkers , artillery platforms, planes, and all manner of assorted fighting vehicles lie in clumps, bunched up where crashes or area of effect weapons destroyed them, or brought them low.
Avatar
Jeonia has a sparkle in her eyes. But not because she is sad to see this mass grave, no, because she is excited to see all this technology. "This, this is incredible. All the tech lying around for us to take away. So many possibilities." She sprints towards the nearest destroyed vehicle. Ground cover has partially overgrown it and the metal is rusty. Halfway she stops and turns around. "Please guard Galmore and me while we are searching for the necessary parts and possibly even more. We are ill equipped and can't carry to much, time is also not in our favor. But if you see something interesting just notify us, a lucky find could bring us even more benefits. Maybe you find some intact energy sources. But the tractor parts are the most important thing. " She looks to the NCO. " What do you think is a good starting area, were you have a good overview of the area? " (edited)
Avatar
"Don't go much beyond where you are now, not without saying something at least"
2:11 PM
The air here is very cold, despite the springtime like season, and the ground gets misty closest to the tree, from eternally slightly green tinged low hanging cloud
Avatar
"Understood. I'll start with this vehicle over here." While she was only thinking about the beautiful landscape on her way here, now all she thinks about is the tech she can find and what good she could do with it. She has no eyes for her surroundings anymore. I wonder what kind of vehicle this one was. It's in really bad shape. But it could be just enough to find parts that help balance and bulk the tractor. Jeonia gets out her knife and tries to cut away the plants to get a better look. "Galmore what do you think?"
Avatar
(lets get a know/int, or a notice/wis for scavenging)
Avatar
(know/int =7) Let's see what we can find. If we are lucky there are even some servos so we could equip both tractors with debris pushers and plows. The driver could move the not used component up, so both could be used as needed. "Galmore what do you think about this here." She shows him something from the back part of the vehicle. "Could that fit?" (edited)
Avatar
“That could fit. Let’s try to strip the hydraulics out of the back of that armored car there then”
8:51 AM
The both of you begin dismantling the parts and dragging them clear to the vehicle and the soldiers help where they can. The wind picks up after a few hours and you almost hear something that sounds like whispers in it.

Jeonia looks over to the Soldiers. "Hey what are you whispering about?" As they give her strange looks and shrug their shoulders, she realises that something is off. Just now she starts to feel the wind and the cold air. Working made her sweat and the cold wind makes her shiver now. I could swear that I heard something. " Galmore, how many parts did we recover as of now? I am feeling quiet uneasy here right now." (edited)
Avatar
“Almost enough. Just a bit more work and we can get out of here. I think I’m hearing things too”
Avatar
"Please, let's hurry. I don't want to be right and see our truck stolen by a ghost driver." She tried to be funny, but after saying it she feels even worse. She gets over to their current recovery project and tries to find the right tool in her MetaTool it takes longer than normal due to Jeonia being hecticly searching. (I envision her MetaTool , as a thing that fits around her left forearm. About 15cm long with small compartments where tools and similar stuff are stored.) The lost focus almost lets her break something they are trying to get out intact.
Avatar
One of the guards raised his rifle to his shoulder but you don’t notice until the earsplitting crack of a crisp laser rifle shot pierces the heavy silence. It whines as the energy beam bounces off a piece of wreckage, burning a neat hole
Avatar
The moment Jeonia hears the shot hitting the vehicle she jumped in fright. Her hand glides down to her laser pistol while she shouts at the soldier. "Are you crazy? Why did you shoot? What's wrong?"
Avatar
He in surprise levels the weapon at you. “Stay back. Stay away from me”
Avatar
Jeonia froze with her eyes wide open. "Please calm down, I am sorry for screaming at you. It's me, you know me for one and a half day now." She tries to take at least partial cover in the wreck she stands on. She looks at the NCO. "Please do something!"
Avatar
He says nothing to you and simply shows his Hands are open and not approaching the panicking marine. “Just stay calm” he says to everyone
Avatar
Jeonia uses a breathing technique to calm herself down while slowly walking backwards into a position with more cover. As relaxed and reassuring as she can, she says. "I am not the enemy my friend. What made you shoot?" With the soldier that wants to kill her on one side and the whispering wind on the other Jeonia is afraid that this could end badly. I have to make a decision or at least buy myself some more time. "I will stay here right now, but let Galmore finish this. We need this part."
Avatar
He seems to agree, but keeps the rifle leveled, his eyes are wild, and racing, beginning to cataract with spreading yellow , as though he is in the grip of some kind of jaundice. His hands shake and the rifle trembles wildly with them
7:15 AM
Galmore heads over to the vehicle, and after a moment there is a loud crunch, as the last part is removed.
Avatar
Jeonia looks over her cover for a moment then ducks right behind it again. That doesn't look good, something seems to be wrong with him and if this isn't just some form of stress then this would be really bad news. I need a plan. Staying here or just walking back the whole way alone would be nearly impossible with all the dangers and my non existing water reserves. I got it. "Someone please help Galmore carry the part. Who is not helping could bring the one who wants me dead to the Truck. I will stay here so you don't need to be afraid." She looks over to Galmore who does look rather surprised. She whispers. "I don't know what's wrong with him, but I guess he needs help and he is a ticking time bomb. Keep him occupied in the back of the truck. I will wait a moment and then try to sneak into the cabin of our truck, so he does not see me at all. This is my plan, blink with your eye if you understood."
Avatar
He blinks, slowly. but still looks a bit confused
Avatar
I don't know if this will work, it has to. She folds her hands and looks to the sky. After a short prayer she closes her eyes, concentrating on everything she hears. There is the sound of the grass in the wind, the whispering of unknown origin. She calms herself. There it is. The sound of parts being put onto the truck. I want to see where he looks, thinking about the Soldiers that wants to make her a dead woman. (Oracle-0 precog. 1 Effort for the day. Does it work for such a question. If not it's another reason she has to train her precog skills)
Avatar
(you didnt actually ask a question. what information are you trying to get)
9:57 AM
(I dont know how to answer this)
Avatar
(She wants to see in what direction the one soldier that wants to kill her looks. As it doesn't give her any bonus on sneaking I guess, it's more of an RP thing then anything that gives her a bonus. If he doesn't look her way in the next minute she would try to sneak to the cabin of the truck.)
Avatar
(thats not sometihng in the future thats something that already happened, oracle will not work here)
Avatar
(No problem, let's assume she tried anyways and failed. Because it doesn't work that way) Why doesn't it work. Allright then, I have to try it nonetheless. I am not good at it so a direct approach seems to be better then sneaking through bushes. She tries to get to the truck with as much cover as she can find, but trying to avoid bushes. Head down and as sneaky as she can. If this won't work, I will face a long walk home or blood on my hands. (edited)
Avatar
You see the both of them, and the rest of the squad busy getting the last few components aboard, they dont seem to notice you sneaking toward the cab
Avatar
Only a few meters left. I need to focus. Focus Jeonia! Maybe seeing nothing was the vision I was supposed to get. Maybe it was what I needed. She sneaks towards the cabin. (She would prefer an open door, if both are closed she would open the passenger door)
Avatar
(Both doors are open) The soldiers are all out of the truck, helping

Galmore get the largest component settled into the bay
Avatar
(okay so the truck is on the crest of the hill, Jeonia is coming from the valley so she has cover from the hill. Is there any stone about fist size or a bit smaller lying around?)
Avatar
(Yes)

This reminds me of a documentary I saw as a kid. Stanley Xavier Hippington tried to be the first to find the mythical Stillwater Giant on the planet of Quintara. His way was blocked by some aggressive animals, so he lured them away by throwing a stone. This one over there looks promising. I'm going to throw it onto the crest on the driver's side and then see if I can sneak onto the passengers seat or better into the footwell. She grabs the stone and throws it. Ready to sneak.

(What are you trying to do?0
12:20 PM
(I don't get it)
Avatar
(trying to get into the truck and hide there. With one of them trying to kill me and the rest, possibly being on my side, they should play along if they see me. So I stay in the footwell until we arrive in Mytikas or something else happens. The stone is just a distraction so nobody sees me getting into the cabin as she throws it into the opposite direction . So unless Mr. Crazy sees me I could be fine. Unless you think differently. If they don't play along or they see me and everything escalates then Jeonias plan simply failed and I will play on from that new situation.)

On the way back Jeonia sees the fields freed of the top layer, ready to be used. "What happened here? How could they do that so fast? Galmore, I guess we need to hurry getting those tractors going. The fields seem to be prepared already." She looks at the crazed soldier and back to Galmore. "The Garden of Bones seems to be a perfect source for materials, at least considering our current situation. If we can find out what happened to him and how we can protect ourselves, salvaging could be relatively save. I should talk to an official or even the regent himself don't you think?"
Avatar
"The Regent looks to be heading there himself, on a private venture" Galmore says, looking at the news on his compad. "That soldier seems fine now too. Once we got away from the place his condition started improving"
Avatar
"The Regent? Someone should tell him what we experienced. If he still wants to go he should warn his entourage too. It would be a disaster for us if he got shot by one of his comrades."
Avatar
"He's going alone, and is aware....lets just focus on what we came here to do. Let;s get the vehicles augmented"
Avatar
"Alone?" She shakes her head "Yeah he is different...." "I am ready when you are. So let us get the working bees ready." On their way she asks Galmore. "So what will you do tomorrow after this is done? I for my part would show those farmers how to drive their new toy, but I guess they won't need me for that. I would love to build up some workshop but that will be pretty hard without anything and alone." She smiles at Galmore.
Avatar
"But who knows maybe my skills will be needed elsewhere, as long as I get out of my home under a rock I will do anything to help our community."
Avatar
"I have plenty of my own work to do, but if you want to start a workshop you're going to be lucky to even find replacement tools, or enough parts to tinker with. You're going to have to work hard"
Avatar
"Hard work is my least problem. I will figure something out. Let's finish the tractors, I want to see the fruits of our expedition in action." They arrive at the place they left the tractors.
Avatar
They haven't been disturbed in the few days you were gone, the plow has been left off so the suspension could be replaced, and re-balanced before mounting
Avatar
There they are. The paint crumbles off on many parts, but they will be a big help for us all. While working on them she takes out her knife and carves into both of them Working Bee below that a JS She smiles. This way something will live on, no matter what happens. The fixing and screwing and hammering takes its time. Everyone who passes by hears some 'klong klong' of the hammer hitting metal or other characteristic sounds. Some stay for a few minutes and watch, but most have to do too much themselves and do go their ways. The sun slowly but surely makes its way to the horizon. "We need to hurry a bit. We should try if everything works before it's dark, working in moonlight is not good. We definitely need some form of electricity production. In a way that we can at least recharge energy cells and the like." That's it! This is what I can do. I will think about that tomorrow when the tractors are finished and running.
Avatar
THe tractors fire up after a quick test, and their headlights pierce the night as eager farmers waste no time getting the seeds into freshly plowed furrows . The energy and power generation issue remains a problem, as you've observed
Avatar
"Have a nice evening Galmore. If you need help for anything again, just tell me." Before going home herself, she sat down feeling the grass in her hands and enjoying the the sound of the tractor on the field. She was happy that everything went well. When she went home it was already pitch black. She almost fell, walking through the rubble filled city. Behind the curtain, that was her entry door, it was even darker. She took out one of her energycells and a light bulb she had lying around. Together with some wire she tinkerd herself a working lightsource. She liked this electric tingling she felt the moment everything was connected. Hours of planning later she just fell asleep right where she sat. Jeonia wakes up from light shining into her face. Did I forget to pull the wire? No its the sun what time is it? Oh no I overslept, how could that happen? Well it doesn't matter, half a day is better then no day at all. I need an axe, a saw and logs for the construction and wire, long wire and a strong magnet to build the generator, then the transformer. So much to do. Let's see if I can get some help, or atleast the tools. Cheerfully she makes her way to a more central part of Mytikas to find what she needs. (In the centre she would try to find the needed parts or places were she could find them. Like a forrest with high trees. She wouldn't reject people that give her components or information only if she does them a favor in return.)
Avatar
Central Mytikas is centered around the temple of Ares, and the city rubble has been cleared away, moved outside to be crushed into cement. Some brickwork with clay taken from the fields is being laid out in the sun to dry, eventually becoming a new central street leading from the temple doors. Spraypaint lines, several meters apart, mark where the innermost defensive ring of walls will eventually be built.
10:57 AM
Workmen and artisans move with one another, packs of porters following behind, getting ready to continue clearing rubble for another day
Avatar
Jeonia closes her eyes and sees a bright city. Everything a mix of the antique buildings mixed with modern building and streetlights. Somewhere is a billboard that shows some advertisements with the portrait of the Regent, atleast how Jeonia pictures him, as she has never seen him in person. On the lower right corner one can read 'Powered by Sawall Electric a subsidiary of Sawall Industries'. You need to dream big they say. But let's start with the first steps. They all look so busy. But instead of cleaning the city of the rubble they could help me too. I need some axes and saws. Then I will ask some of those workers if they would join me on a trip to the next forest. It shouldn't be too dangerous I guess. She walks towards some of those workers. "Do you happen to know where I could buy some axes and saws? I am going to build wind turbines to bring back the light to Mytikas."
Avatar
(Mytikas is nowhere anything like that, the whole city is a rubble field. You've been on planet for less than a month)

"Tools? Anything you've got on you is already worth a fortune. Metal only started coming in recently, but you might be able to get some cast-offs from the forge to make your own"
1:53 PM
"It's scrap stuff, not good enough for fasteners or components. You'll have to work to coax the durability out"
Avatar
(Most of Mytikas are ruins right now, with only the temple being slightly better off, right?)
Avatar
(Yeah, and even then "better off" is generous )
Avatar
"Well, thanks for your help. I hope your day will be productive." I can't remember that I saw a forge here before. But honestly a few days ago I was carrying rubble like most people with the occasional fixing job. I don't know much about smithing but maybe I can help those guys too. After asking for the direction Jeonia walks quickly but still cautious as to not fall over something. After a bit of walk she hears some 'cling cling' of someone hitting metal with metal. She speeds up to see how this forge looks like.
Avatar
The forge is medieval to say the least once you find it. Using your ears to search as you’d thought would be best. Three workers in sweat soaked coveralls labor over a forge that is little more than half an old fuel drum over a very large fire pit, someone taking turns using a makeshift bellows to fan the flames. Rough tools are cooling or having handles put on them by what looks to be the master of the shop
Avatar
As Jeonia gets closer, the sound is accompanied by the smell of hard-working men that had no chance to really wash for a while. And the smell of the materials being burned to heat the forge. There is soot everywhere, they must be working day and night. As she enters the forge, sweat is already forming on her forehead. Nobody seems to care that she is there, everyone is focused on their work. This one over there seems to be the master of the shop, he is the one to talk to. She tries to speak loud enough, so she is heard through the noise. "Hello there I am Jeonia. I need some tools to build simple Wind Turbines to start up our energy production. But I am not here to simply demand those tools or to buy them. I mean I could buy them. I am quite crafty and have some nimble hands, but aside from that, I was also part of the last expedition to the Garden of Bones. So if there is any favor I can do in exchange for some axes and saws, just tell me. Oh, and wire if you're able to create wire in your forge with a wiredrawer. If there is nothing I can do for you, I will pay you." (edited)
Avatar
"Turbines you say?"" he shouts over the noise "Power? We could use plenty of that here. We could use more fuel too"
Avatar
(Does Jeonia see anything she could optimize around her? Given her tools and materials.) She gets closer to him so she doesn't need to shout. "Yeah, fuel would be great too. But you don't happen to know where we can find some? It's not like its growing on trees. Except for coal, which could be made out of trees. So unless you have some hot news about some resource locations, even if it's just some gossip, I could go there first and take a look. Maybe some oily swamp that eats people." Jeonia laughs. Which could seem disturbing given the context. "If you have no such information I will start by felling some trees in the forest."
Avatar
(The forge looks like complete trash, and Jeonia probably could make a better setup given the time/materials, but once you get power back, things are probably going to get rebuilt again, so its up to you)
Avatar
(You are right it makes no sense to optimize something that gets obsolete when energy comes back up. So no optimizing, energy it is.)
Avatar
"We need something that burns hotter than wood, like coal, or even chemicals, at this point. It's getting too difficult to temper the products we make with what is on hand, right now"
Avatar
Jeonia thinks for a moment, first starring at a wall then with closed eyes. The sweat running more and more in the heat of the forge. "Well charcoal could be an option, but for that we would need wood too. With axes that break before felling even one tree, that would be frustrating. But an option nonetheless. Another one would be peat. It's no charcoal or hard coal but if there is a bog with peat deposits then this would be easily accessible and usable. Chemicals could work too, but if we use them up it will take time until we can reproduce them. So I will try to find someone with information about resource deposits in the close vicinity. When I come back with something to burn that burns hotter and better than wood, will you give me the tools I need to build up the wind turbines?" With the Regent out of the city, I need to find someone else who has such information. But I guess the Temple will be a good start. (edited)
Avatar
“It sounds like a fair trade to me. Get us a fuel source and you can take as many tools as you need”
Avatar
They shake hands to seal the deal. Even before their hands lose contact, Jeonia turns around and starts moving. Because it's freaking hot in there and parts of her clothes were already soaking wet. But she is also motivated to change things for the better. She is almost running through the city, towards the temple. She passes busy people left and right. The way up to the temple is not filled with as many people, but her head fills with thoughts. Well, everything sounded so good when I said it, but whom to ask when I am up there? I heard the Regent has a wife, maybe she is in charge now, or some soldier or general. I need to look like I am important. Don't show your insecurities Jeonia! She reaches the temple plateau and heads straight for the first guard she sees. "Who is in charge here?" she says. With a tone that sounds way more commanding than she wanted to sound.
Avatar
You get some stares from a few of the custodians here, but you see a veteran Myrmidon offer and three of her senior adjutants heading down the stairs, very clearly now all looking at you, after the outburst '
Avatar
Maybe I went to far. But I guess I have their attention now. This woman over there looks like she could break me in halves. She is maybe the one I am looking for. Be self confident Jeonia! She walks straight towards the Myrmidon Officer, her laser pistol swinging at her waist. Her clothes are still partly wet from sweating. She reaches out with her open hand, ready to shake hands. She says, still to harsh but not as bad as before. "Hello I am Jeonia, are you in charge here? If so I need some information about resource deposits in the vicinity."
Avatar
Two of her guards place hands on sword hilts before they see it’s just a handshake. “Indeed. I am Commander Cole, acting regent until such time Regent Adonis returns. You’re looking for resources? We are all looking for resources”
Avatar
Jeonia twitches a little bit when she sees the to guards reaching for their swords. But she tries to keep her posture as she knows that if she seems to be just a nobody, she won't get any information. But still her first words come out rather shaky. She is impressed or rather cowed from the presence and stance of the guards and now-Regent Cole. "I... I understand that if there were any easily accessible resource deposits you would have sent people to mine them." Thanks to the guards just standing there and Regent Cole who seems to listen, Jeonia gets back into her mode of talking too much. Not knowing if Cole just has some fun watching her talk or even seeing Jeonia talk herself into trouble, or if Cole really is interested in what Jeonia has to say. "I am eager to build wind turbines. They won't be those big monsters that you may know from wherever you are from. But nonetheless they would produce electricity, enough to refill energy cells, maybe power up some not too demanding industry. And we could bring back light to the streets or into the soon-to-be-build homes. Aside from wire and magnets, I would only need wood and ropes, well some footing would be great too and manpower of course. But for all that, I need tools from the forge. And the forge needs better fuel to produce those tools. Now the fuel is why I am here. I don't know if we have some chemicals in stock that could be used for that. But I would rather use what we can find here. I guess you have an overview what's around us and if there are any bogs with peat or easily accessible coal or something you come up with. And if you are unsure with certain locations I could look into them. I happen to be a part of the last expedition to the Garden of Bones. I just don't want to come back to the forge with only buckets full of Trollboar dung. Can you help me?"
Avatar
"Ideally, we would get a fusion reactor again, or a few of them even , and we wouldnt need to worry about fuel, but we're a long way off from that. The land around the river crossings near here, where those burrowing beasts are is marshy,we haven't been able to do a survey there for peat or coal yet. You sound like you've just volunteered"
Avatar
"Of course I do! That's why I am here!" She says vigorously before the realization of what she just did kicks in. She gulps. Shit. What did I just do? The one beast I saw was frightening, even in death. "So erm,.." She gulps again. Jeonia looks at Cole who looks way more battle-proven than herself. "Do, do you know those beasts? The last time I went on an expedition, I wasn't entirely alone you know? Would there be any available company for me?"
Avatar
“They fight hard and they die hard. You had some success with the last foray into the wilds. What would you think about heading out with them again?”
Avatar
"That would be great! I felt save with them around. I.. I mean we looked out for each other." She looks at Cole again. "Commander Cole, you look like you can fight way better then I am. Would you mind giving me some shooting lesson today? If you're not busy of course." (Just looking for a reason to justify my raise of the shoot skill with the last lvl up.)
Avatar
“I’ve got far too much to do but I’m sure your pioneer team has some skilled security. Train with them a bit before you head out”
Avatar
"Will do, thank you. I will report back as soon as we find something" She leaves with both happiness and sadness. If they are successful the fuel could be more important to Mytikas than the tractors. But she knows what dangers could await her. She already saw one of those beasts. She heads straight for Galmores home to see if he wants to accompany her again. It is a few minutes from the temple but Jeonia is quite fast. "Hey Galmore, are you there?" (Does she see if he has family, like wife and kids?)
Avatar
(No family) “Cmon Up!” He calls our throufh the partially open tent flap.
Avatar
"On my way." She says as she gets into the tent. No wife nor children here. Good, I wouldn't want to make anyone widow or half-orphans. "Did you see the tractors? They work great! But that's not why I am here. You have been a great partner in our last endeavor. You know, I talked to Commander Cole. Do you happen to know her? She seems, well, somehow reserved. But she is also not the topic of my way too long monologue. I am going to the marshes, hoping to find peat, coal or anything else that burns better than wood. By the way, that's the place where we found that cadaver. I could need someone who only points his scanner at me, not a rifle when he gets infected with something crazy." Jeonia laughs. "What do you say? Are you in?"
Avatar
“I’m in. We are doing good work and we work well together. I think we should keep a good thing going. Did you have anyone else agreeing to come along yet?
Avatar
"phew It's great to have you on board. I did not ask anybody else yet. You have been my first choice." Not that I know many other people here. "I will go to the Soldiers camp, to see who wants to come with us. And while I am there, I will ask for someone to teach me some shooting. I don't want to be useless when one of those scaly beasts makes an entrance to the scene. I guess we will roll out of Mytikas tomorrow in the early morning. So I will pick you up tomorrow morning then. Got to go now." She waves as she moves on to see if they can get some soldiers to go on that mission with them. A few minutes later she arrives at the camp and heads straight for the captain's tent. "Hello, I need to speak with the captain." (edited)
Avatar
“The Captain is busy. What do you need?” Asks one of the gate guards. They cross their spears right away as you approach, looking to barrel through the gate
Avatar
Realising she was a bit harsh, she tries again a bit nicer. "Hey, Hey, no aggression needed. It's not like I could possibly walk past you. So the captain is busy you say? Could I still enter the campside and talk to some soldiers? I want to see if the one, that got ill during our last trip, is better now. So would you let me in?" Lets hope this works, else I need another idea.
Avatar
“We can’t let civilians just walk all over a military encampment. Especially if you’re just trying to talk.”
Avatar
Great. But I have an idea "So you are doing your job then. Two good soldiers. Did I mention that Commander Cole sent me to get some shooting lesson and to find crew for an exploration trip? If that's not enough let's play a game. I turn around and you" She points at the soldier on the left "Write down the first person you think about with your spear on the ground. If I can guess it you let me in?" (If he accepts, Jeonia would use oracle to see what will be written on the ground.)
Avatar
“We aren’t interested in games. Wait here a moment. If you try to force your way in you’ll be shot. So don’t try anything” One heads into a small guard shack and you can see him picking up the radio.
10:23 AM
He talks for a few moments as the other, now very clearly in a bad mood from this conversation keeps his weapon leveled at you. “Cole did authorize entry. Let her pass”
Avatar
All discipline, no fun. I should definitely work on my talking skills though, or else I get killed without wanting to be rude in a situation. "Sorry for tempting you two. I will report your great discipline to commander Cole when I see her again. Oh and the name you wanted to write down, I guess it was Adonis." I better don't tell them that I get used to soldiers pointing their weapons at me. She enters through the gate. (Does she see the NCO? And is there any female Soldier present?)
Avatar
(There are a mix of male and female soldiers who are part of the militia, the units are mixed, so men and women in the same unit. The NCO is there)
Avatar
(Understood. Do you name every NPC or can I name some too? Like the NCO or the female Soldier she wants to ask if she could train her. NCO could be Demetrios and the female one could be Ioanna.) It's not like the camp is big, far from it, but Jeonia is still lost. Not knowing whom to ask for training, she looks at everyone she sees. They are all capable of shooting I guess, but I need someone who is understanding, to teach me. I don't even know the right names for every part on my gun. Maybe a woman is a better choice here. After I find one, I'll go to the NCO to talk about the trip. (She would go to one that looks like a nice person. It could also be one that is part of the NCOs Squad.) After she found a potantial trainer, she slowly but surely walks towards her. She reaches out with her shaky hand, for a handshake. The other hand is behind her head. She asks way more shy than with the other guards she met today. "He.. Hey I am Jeonia. erm I am looking for someone who could help me get better at my shooting ability. My shooting is terrible you know." She laughs in a way that makes her look cute and stupid at the same time. "So, do you have time to teach me?"
Avatar
(I try not to name them so if you want to you can)
Avatar
(Good to know, Demetrios and Ioanna it is then.) (edited)
Avatar
"I heard the commander already instructed one of us to. Ah, well, I guess I have time. Gets me out of latrine duty" she says more to herself than to you. "Do you have a weapon?"
Avatar
"Yes this one." She gets out her Laser Pistol and holds it in her hands, unsecured and pointed towards Ioanna, before fiddling around with it to see if everything is still there. "Oh and I do have four energy cells with me. One of them is not completely full anymore. I used it to power a small light bulb." Jeonia hands everything to Ioanna. "I bought it when I was young. Never used it. I had it on me in case someone cau.., erm wanted to rob me. But I never shot with it." She looks around to see if no one is listening. "I don't want to be a liability when we are on the expedition. Let's start? "
Avatar
"Lets start. Have you ever shot anything? Anything not a target I mean, like an animal, or a person"
Avatar
"When I was a kid, like ten years ago, my grandfather let me shoot on big bison-like animals. Those were regularly breaking through our fences. I was shooting with an old rifle that wasn't meant to kill them, just scare them away. Maybe I hit once or twice. Nevertheless one day my grandfather stopped letting me shoot. I don't know why. But now I am here!"
Avatar
She sighs, seeing the work ahead of her writ large. Youre brought to a small range, with a number of metal plates taken from wreckage set up on clamps. Most have at least a few holes or burns on them from other training. A myrmidon and two city militia are here, practicing- the snap and crack of their weapons and the plink of metal on metal hits the only sound in the otherwise quiet encampment
Avatar
"So I need to hit targets then, can't be too difficult right?" She puts her backpack on the ground, gets on her knees and digs in her backpack. She gets up with one of the scales she cut off from the cadaver. "This one would be the perfect target for the end of the training session." She readies her pistol and tries to aim at the targets. She holds the weapon with both hands in front of her and with both eyes open. "Am I doing that right?" (edited)

Ioanna adjusts your stance, straightening arms, adjusting your foot. "Look down the sight, and keep your back arm a bit loose, to absorb the recoil'
Avatar
Jeonia lets herself be put in position, eager to remember everything Ioanna says. "Thank you for your patience. So should I try to hit that scrap thingy over there?" (shoot?)
Avatar
(Well, it would be an attack roll. but we can make it with your new level in the skill)
Avatar
She concentrates and tries to do as she was told. She pulls the trigger as soon as she seems to be on target. pew "Wohoo, Ioanna did I hit?" (15/5)
Avatar
a neat hole, laser burned around the edges and trailing wispy smoke is carved into the scale. A direct and well aimed hit
Avatar
"See I hit it, I hit it!" She hugs Ioanna before realizing that this might be inappropriate. She immediately lets her of the hug. "Sorry, I guess that was not cool for you. But thank you. I hit did you see that?" She smiles. "This way I maybe hit once or twice when the team is in need of it. Are you actually part of Demetrios Squad? We should go see him, not that his squad is not available tomorrow." Eager to hear what Ioanna has to say, they start walking towards the campside.
Avatar
"the squads are pretty loose for militia, some of us have other jobs, or other duties, one day though, we might all be able to just be proper soldiers. I'm part of things for now though"
Avatar
"I see. But wouldn't it be great if there was no need for military? I know it's wishful thinking as there could always be a danger from outside. But I want to make this a peaceful planet. Where nobody gets prosecuted for being himself."
Avatar
She laughs out loud at the thought "alright sleepy, we need you back from dreamland now. Let's get everyone else together and head out"
Avatar
Jeonia looks like she ate something sour, before poking Ioanna into her side with a finger. "Now you are getting a bit too eager to get out of this camp. We need to talk to Demetrios first. And the start is planned for tomorrow morning. We need to use every daylight we get. It takes a while to get there. I hope to see you tomorrow too, if Demetrios is okay with it." (we can skip to the start of the trip, else we continue at the camp) (edited)
Avatar
The next morning your team assembles at the eastern city gate- or in this case, the shell destroyed ruin of it. a small grav-skiff, probably transported from one of the starports or cargo zones on Creusa's industrial moon hovers there, the cabin windows either removed, or broken- as it is open
Avatar
Great the crew is all together again. Even Ioanna is here. Jeonia has no problems climbing into their vehicle and tries to help Galmore get in. "I never sat in on of those things. Demetrios, how fast is this skiff? Will we reach the marsh lands with the sun still up or already down?" (edited)
Avatar
"too early to say" he says , looking over the controls. "Just hang on to something"
Avatar
Happy to see the landscape again, Jeonia positions herself close to the front. Clinging onto some railing. As they start their voyage, she sees some other people leaving the city too. She waves towards them, like people on cruise ships do. At least in the movies she saw. "Take your time Demetrios, but please warn us if you try to stop the vehicle. I don't want to fall out. I will look out for those scaly beasts for you."
Avatar
he passes a pair of binoculars out the back slat where a window used to be, the strap snapping in the wind, on its fine leather cord
Avatar
Jeonia gets up and tries to balance herself while she carefully walks over to Demetrios to grab the binoculars. "I never used binoculars since I was a kid. Gave me headaches until I figured out how to adjust them." A change in speed makes her almost fall, but she kneels down a little and stabilizes again. She's trying to cover that up by saying. "This is a pretty cord and a nice binocular. I will take care of it." Putting the cord behind her head to secure it, she gets back in position and looks at the landscape again. A few minutes in she realizes that she has some serious scouting duty, so she watches for everything unusual. "Nothing to see so far. But this zoom is crazy."

(6 landscape is too distracting)
Avatar
(I didn't tell you the DC) Distantly, maybe ten kilometers out or so, you see a handful of very large mounds, that look to be made of a mache textured substance, though it looks to have taken the weather far better than the actual craft substance c
Avatar
"Really the zoom is amazing." She points ahead of them. "There are multiple interesting hills ahead of us, a few kilometers away. An interesting formation. I never saw mounds textured this way before. We should take a closer look, but be careful. Could you stop a few hundred meters away from them? They are kinda on our route anyway" Jeonia is focused on the hills, curious like always. (edited)
Avatar
The skiff's course changes slightly, making ready to head in that direction. "Eyes up everyone. Lets keep our wits about us here" He calls out to everyone in the skiff bed.
Avatar
She balances again towards Demetrios. As she reaches him, she starts whispering. "I really think this formation is interesting, beautiful and dangerous at the same time. Let us just scout from a safe distance. I don't want to be the reason for a delay again. If it looks safe, we should come back later or send another expedition to that formation. If it seems dangerous we should determine what danger is to be expected." Before going back to her scouting position she signals Galmore that everything is fine and showing Ioanna from a distance that her laser pistol is secured.
Avatar
(So do you want him to stop for investigating or no? )
Avatar
(yes but with some distance)
Avatar
The skiff comes to a halt and sets down in the grass a far distance , about 1km from the mounds and everyone disembarks
Avatar
Jeonia jumps of the skiff and goes deep into her knees to soften the landing. She tries to find a position with a good view of the area. She looks through the binoculars to examine the mounds again, but also to see if anything is moving in the area. "I have never seen hills like that." "They are worth a delay." She mumbles to herself. As sonn as she is finished she would hand the binoculars over to Demetrios. (edited)
11:37 PM
(Jeonias decision making is as solid as Flubber.)
Avatar
Nothing appears to be moving out on the mounds, but you are still a bit of a ways out. Those with weapons unlimber them from slings or holsters, and make ready to carefully march out
Avatar
Jeonia stands next to Demetrios. "I know I caused delays on our last expedition. But whoever or whatever made these mounds went to a lot of trouble, or used a material I do not know. We should investigate it. If it gets too demanding or time consuming or we don't get any reasonable results, then another expedition can investigate this. But maybe someone should stay in the grav-skiff and be ready in case of emergency. Don't look at me like that, I trust your abilities, but who knows what lurks here. So, forward?" Jeonia waits for a reaction from Demetrios before walking.
Avatar
He begins moving off toward the mounds, rifle ready, but loose in hand, arriving closer you see they resemble termite mounds, and dozens if not hundreds of tiny insects, tiny in this case being the size of a fist, swarm all over them
Avatar
"Eek, insects and so many of them. And they are bigger than my fist. This is disgusting. So they are the makers of those structures. But what is in those structures? Does someone know those? But nontheless, if they are aggresive we wont be able to defend right?"
Avatar
"I dont thnk they're paying any attention to us" Demetrios says, observing them hard at work, ever building their mounds
Avatar
They're disgusting, it makes my stomach turn. Ghosts? Okay. Soldiers shooting at me? Also okay. Huge termites? Not okay. "I don't see any point in crawling into these termite hills and getting eaten. If you ask me we should try to take some of the material they build their hills from and one or two termites to examine later in Mytikas. As long as no one becomes a feast for the termites. Volunteers?"
Avatar
ioanna sighs and takes out her combat knife, and a small glass jar from her pack, wrapped in burlap. She pours out the milky blue liquid that was within, and begins digging into the mound with the tip, scooping some of the material, and five of the insects into the jar, before sealing it
Avatar
When Ioanna comes back to the group, Jeonia says, loud and clear, "Thank you!" The bad conscience is written on Jeonia's face as she approaches Ioanna. Jeonia does not look at the jar. "I'm sorry, these insects cause a strange sensation all over my body. What was the milky bluish liquid you had in the jar?"
Avatar
"a little something I was going to celebrate coming home with, in a few days. Maybe I'll live to make more, sometime." she shrugs "Good of the mission I suppose"
Avatar
Oh, Ioanna. Hard shell and yet a soft core. I'll make it up to you. "Whatever it was, I'll help you make a new one as soon as we get back safe." Jeonia goes over to Demetrios. "Shall we go on? There is a bog waiting for us." (edited)
Avatar
He shrugs and begins heading back to the skiff, and once everyone is aboard it heads out. The bog is still a bit of a drive and he expects it to be evening before you’re close. “We are going to have to camp probably. I don’t love the idea of floundering in the dark”
Avatar
Jeonia is visibly unhappy about having to spend the night in the wilderness again. "Luckily it's not raining and it won't be too cold either." Jeonia again enjoys her view from her place on the bow of the skiff. (How many people does this expedition have?)

"This time, there won't be a double shift for you Demetrios." She says while thinking about how her last vigil went.

"We'll see if I sleep anyway" he says, softly chuckling to himself
Avatar
"Maybe we find a not to shabby Motel with a guarded parking lot." She says laughing. Got to bring the mood up a little bit. "And maybe little 4 eyes were two cute kittens. But seriously, the sun is going down, slowly but surely. We should look out for a good spot for the night." (edited)

(Lets get a survive/wiz)
Avatar
You find a small encampment site that is the only flat ground in the area, near a bubbling but muddy brook of water. One of the river tributaries crosses through the area here and the grass along its banks is very ling.
8:57 AM
"We might be able to burn some of the dried stuff to get a fire going" Ioanna suggests
Avatar
Such a great countryside and where do we end? But it was the best place we passed in the last hour or so. Jeonia gets off the skiff and touches the cool grass and rips out some of it. "Ioanna, burning some of those might be a good idea. But before we die in a fire inferno, please come with me to this bubbly brook. I want to see if it is usable to extinguish a fire or if it is too muddy." After those insects I don't want to die in a fire while sleeping. (Does it look like fire could be spreading out of control?)
Avatar
(with that survive roll you're not sure, the ground isn't extra dry or anything though, so you'd be able to observe that, at least)
Avatar
(okay so just checking the muddy brook with Ioanna then and talk to her, before the fire) (edited)
Avatar
The brook coughs and sputters a thick mud , streaked with black. The plants along its banks seem to be flourishing , and you hear the sounds of bugs, or maybe undocumented amphibians calling to one another from deep within their tangles, well hidden from sight
Avatar
After looking at the strange water, Jeonia starts digging a small hole. While she is digging she talks to Ioanna. "I don't know Ioanna, if the fire spreads uncontrollably we could destroy animals and nature that are still unknown to us. In addition, we may put ourselves in danger. I think we will survive the night without a fire. I will also volunteer for a shift in the night watch. I wanted to tell you again that I'm sorry that you dumped your drink. And I thought it was pretty brave how you dared to go there to this insect nest and catch the termites. I think I can learn a lot from you in the future." When the hole is big enough, Jeonia goes back to the brook and gets a handful of the blackest thickest mud. Transports it into the hole and cleans her hands. Then she lights some dry grass and drops it into the hole. (edited)
Avatar
The fire sputters for several seconds as the small amount is added, and then flares brilliantly as the strange black sediment begins fueling it. It is a very short but very hot burn.
Avatar
Jeonia starts to grin. "You see that Ioanna? Ahahaha that could be a fuel we came to look for. Do you feel the heat?" Overwhelmed by her feelings, she hugs Ioanna and does not realize that she did, before talking again. "I had to test it. We should definetly stay here for the night and examine this tomorrow morning. Maybe we can even build one or two oil lamps for the night by digging holes and filling them with this substance and then use some grass or something else as a wick. Lets go tell Demetrios dont you think?" (edited)
Avatar
"He should know we might be camped on a hazard, at the very least" she agrees
Avatar
"Yeah, maybe you're right. But as long as we don't burn everything down, nothing should happen to us tonight. They go over to the skiff and Jeonia shows Demetrios the cloth she used to clean her hands. "Jackpot! It's an oil-like substance. Either not pure or just different from what I know. Nevertheless, it is a great fuel. In my opinion we can camp here. However, we should not use explosives, set uncontrolled fires or do anything similar that can turn our camp into an inferno. Tomorrow we should have a closer look at all of this. If you agree, I would take a shift tonight."
Avatar
He asks Ioanna how your shooting lessons went, and she nods , satisfactorily. "I still want teams of 2 on tonight, just in case. We're alone out here, away from easy help if something does happen"
Avatar
"Copy that. I'd take the middle shift again. So that others can sleep longer in one piece. I will look at the stars and enjoy the silence. Optionally I also enjoy nice conversations as Demetrios knows already." Even if some people say I talk too much and without period and comma. While Jeonia is talking, she crawls back into the skiff. "Maybe someone volunteers for the shift with me and I'm not talking about the wild animals of Heras." She lies down on her place on the bow. "Oh and please only fire energy weapons in utmost emergencies only. I don't know how stable the formation is here. It won't explode, I think. It should need oxygen to burn, I suspect at least. But an uncontrolled fire could rob us of the energy source or make the extraction more difficult." She starts to speak with longer and longer pauses between words. Finally she falls asleep with a smile on her face. (edited)
Avatar
You are woken for your watch later by Demetrios , he’s had to scold a few people for trying to smoke already and is in a bad mood
Avatar
Jeonia wakes up with a mark of her MetaTool on her face. She can barely open her eyes. "What happened? Did I die in an inferno? Oh, is it my shift already? Alright then." She gets up, streches out her limbs and listens to what Demetrios has to say. "Hey see it this way, you won't get any new ones anytime soon. So this way everyone saved some cigarettes for tomorrow or for whenever we leave this place. Did anything else happen Demetrios? And who is the poor soul that has to sit with me through the shift?"
Avatar
"Me" he grunts. "Long night ahead of us. Might rain after all, waiting to see what some of those clouds do"
Avatar
Oh well, now I look like an idiot. "I can be quiet too, if that lightens your mood. I prefer no rain though. Although a good bath to clean my clothes and myself, is something I would need." Jeonia looks down on her clothes, seeing all the dirt and torn parts. Well there will come a time where I don't look like some homeless girl. But I don't think he understands, he is used to it as a soldier I guess. She sits down on a good vantage point of the skiff. And then looks at Demetrios. "You seem to be a good leader, doing double shifts and the like. And you actually are quite nice to us two civilians. I know, I know, I said I won't talk that much. Just wanted to say that you are a nice person and you are not just out here because that one woman, me, wants to explore Heras and the Vice Regent told you to tag along. If this substance here is worth extracting, we can get our Metalworks going and then, then is when the magic will happen. I will get us some electricity. All those empty Cells can be reloaded. This will also be good for you. And lights in the dark. Although I like the to see the stars." She looks at Demetrios. "I guess, I better shut up and watch some stars and our surroudings." (edited)
Avatar
He nods, you can tell he's been listening, but is focusing on watching the horizon through binoculars, careful to only run the night vision for a few seconds at a time to save as much of the cell as possible. "Nothing but grass and bugs out there" he sighs
Avatar
"It could be worse." She reaches for one of her Type-A Cells. "Wanna switch Cells? I will be able to load them, sooner or later."
Avatar
"I'll be rationing it anyway, but that's kind of you" he says, panning back and forth, the device clicking as vision modes are cycled on and off. "We'll have enough to get through the night, at least"
Avatar
She puts back the Cell and starts talking again. "This is all so different then my old life. Going on expeditions and stuff. I mean I can look around to see if something is coming for us, but I am not trained in such things. I wouldn't be able to survive out here alone, lucky me I don't have to. How is life for the soldiers right now?"
Avatar
“Not much can change in a few short days” he says “no matter what you’re trying to accomplish. It’s the same as ever”
Avatar
"Your positivity is as bright as the sun right now." She laughs. "This might be a topic for another day, but I would like to defend myself without any weapons. You think Ioanna could teach me that too? And by the way the night is really peaceful no kittens around, just some insects and the bubbly brook."
Avatar
"Not sure what she knows. Our unit was pulled together from defense auxiliary troopers and a handful of Myrmidon washouts. We didn't get much time with each other before now"
Avatar
"Maybe in a few months from now, all of you become one unit, there to defend Mytikas. I know you guys do that already. But what I mean is that you stop doing it as a duty and start doing it because this is our home now. A place where everyone has a second chance to become who he always wanted to be. But now lets enjoy the stars and the quiet night." And maybe most of you soldiers won't be needed on the Planet in a few years from now. Because this will become a peaceful place. But I guess we have to endure violence before we get there.
Avatar
Demetrios pauses as he surveys the grassland and you hear the slight electrical hum as the thermal and night vision filters both go active. He cycles between them, trying to get a read on whatever he thinks he saw. He is breathing slowly, trying to keep himself steady
Avatar
Jeonia likes to hear the humming, she just likes the sound. But then she realizes what is happening and tries to see if she can see something, in the dark, with her eyes and no nightvision. She doesn't. It takes all patience she has, to not talk with Demetrios right away. She feels the tension and cant stop it. She whispers. "Demetrios, is something out there? I don't see anything." (Terminal Reflection only works when there is a real suprise attack. Not when the character already expects an incoming attack, right?)
Avatar
(Thats correct)

"Don't shoot. We need to wait and see. We are safe here right? Don't we have any working lights attached to this skiff?"
Avatar
"Wake everyone else up. I'll keep my eyes on this thing"
Avatar
wow what kind of a mechanic am I, when I don't check for working lights while we were still on our way here? Jeonia turns around and walks to the one person sleeping closest to her and wakes that person up without to much noise. And asks that person to do the same. This way everything is calm and organized except for Jeonias head that is full of afraid chaotic thoughts. She gets back to Demetrios after the last one wakes up. (edited)

The shadow of great wings crossing the pale moonlight passes over the camp, for a fleeting moment, and a piercing scream whoops into the night air, freezing your blood, as the creature, the size of a groundcar, circles overhead
3:12 PM
(you guys are first)
Avatar
(This one looks scary, nice art!) Knowing that there won't be an inferno if she misses a shot in the sky and that it's too dangerous to wait and see, she tries to shoot it. She tries to shoot as she learned from Ioanna. But the adrenaline and trying to kill a moving target for the first time isn't actually helping. She aims in front of it and pulls the trigger. (10/5)
Avatar
the shot goes wide as it weaves through the air, though the soldiers also open fire with you (rolling themnow)
8:12 PM
Several solid shot rifles, and two energy weapons streak skyward, striking the creature four times. It's flight is jerky, and interrupted as it begins diving toward the ground, claws extended toward one of the soldiers with you
8:13 PM
He is plucked from the ground, and the creature begins carrying him off towards the woods, rising to just 5m off the ground, as you all react again
8:13 PM
(your turn)
Avatar
"Ikaros!! Nooo!" Jeonia feels the pressure rising even more. More and more thoughts are clouding her mind. She is afraid to hit Ikaros and considers not to shoot. I need to help Ikaros! For a brief moment she remembers her training at the Psychic Acadamy. As she breathes out, the cloud of thoughts leaves her too. She closes her eyes and sees the movement of the beast. Her hands moving by intuition, as she pulls the trigger for a second time. (20/4)
Avatar
The shot wings the beast in the shoulder, crumpling under the trauma, and it corkscrews toward the ground, both of them falling in a bone crunching heap
Avatar
"Oh nooo, Ikaros. We need to see if he is okay, and the beast dead." Without thinking about it Jeonia jumps of the skiff and moves towards the position of the impact. This shot, it was as if I knew where it was about to fly to. I hope Ikaros is okay, but I doubt that. As she moves slowly she again reminds everyone not to shoot if it is not absolutely necessary. (edited)
Avatar
They move past you, swiftly closing in on the beast. Demetrios has his sword drawn, and in a swift downward motion, decapitates the beast
Avatar
Jeonia stands there for a moment. Frozen in place from the violence she just witnessed. It takes a bit before she says. "How is Ikaros doing? I.. I had some basic medical training, just in case someone got hurt handling cargo."
Avatar
He is unconscious, but thankfully not dead. His arm is torn up by the beasts claws during the grab and his shoulder is certainly out of its socket from the fall. A dozen other cuts and bruises now decorate his body
Avatar
Poor Ikaros, you will be fine soon. "If there is some medical equipment that I could use, then I would atleast try to bandage him, so that he doesn't bleed anymore. If there is someone better suited than me, then just help him."
Avatar
One of the soldiers runs to the skiff and grabs the somewhat depleted medical kit from it, and drops it into the grass beside you, bright orange reflective fabric flashing in the criss-crossing flashlight beams
Avatar
All right remember what you learned in that medical training before being accepted as mechanic of the merchant ship. Jeonia carefully examines the content of the medical kit. Not searching for anything in particular as she only wants to do the basic stuff, so he gets back alive to Mytikas. She takes out her knife to cut some cloth of of his uniform and uses it to put some pressure onto the artery of his damaged arm. Then she uses whatever desinfectant is left to atleast try to clean his wounds. Patching up the minor wounds is fast and not problematic. But looking at the blood and damage of his torn arm makes Jeonia become pale. You got this Jeonia. Stay focused. It's just blood. He needs your help! Stay focused! She tries to stitch up the wound as good as she can, considering her stomach goes upside down the whole time. It takes her close to an hour until she thinks she is finished. And in the end his arm looks like one of Frankensteins creations. (Roll to see if the stitching was successful? Else I continue)
Avatar
(oh we def need a heal/int)
Avatar
You're able to stop some of the bleeding, and bind the arm, but after a few moments you can already see the bandages turning red again. "We might need to pack up now, and try to get back, I think he'll be dead by morning if we don't get him some better medical attention, and soon"
Avatar
Angry at herself, after not being able to stop the bleeding, she gets up and throws the packagings, of the bandages she just used, into the night sky. "We should get him into the skiff then. As carefully as possible. And the beast too, for research." After a moment of thinking, she goes straight to one of the soldiers with a flashlight. "May I ?" Not waiting for an answer she grabs it and climbs back into the skiff. Getting and emptying her water bottle. She jumps off the skiff again and jogs to the bubbly creek to fill the bottle with the burnable substance. With the flashlight in her mouth, so she has two free hands she fills it. Her already bloody hands and sleeves get stained by this dark, thick and sticky substance. Seeing all the blood on her hands, a few tears start to run down her face. Don't do that Jeonia, not in front of them. With the bottle filled and the tears dried, she goes to Demetrios and whispers. "I got some of this fuel. It's mostly for research. If Ikaros bleeding gets worse or it looks like he won't pull through, we... , we could heat your sword with that and cauterize the wound. I am not a medic, I would cauterize the wound right now, but I guess if we stop any blood from flowing his arm might die off."
Avatar
"Lets keep that in mind as a last resort" he agrees, and the lights of the skiff click on with power now running through the vehicle, the grunble of its engine blocking out the noise of the other woodland creatures awoken.
Avatar
It begins moving away, back toward Mytikas when Ioanna cries out, pointing at the sky, where dozens of the winged shapes are silhouetted by the moon
Avatar
Oh noo, we are doomed if they try to attack us. "Are they following us or are they just flying around?" Jeonia asks no one in particular while readying her pistol. Maybe they want the dead one back. We shouldn't have attacked first. Maybe they are peaceful. But it doesn't matter now.
Avatar
(they are very clearly soaring after you)
Avatar
(okay I'll continue later then)
Avatar
"Galmore, please help me throwing the beast cadaver out of the skiff." Jeonia goes over to the cadaver, takes out her knife and cuts out some flesh, for possible research. "Let us throw the body first!" (Before throwing the head, Jeonia would examine the head. Mostly to see how the eyes and its nose look like)
Avatar
(There's not time to do an examination like that if youre trying to also chuck the body out, while this swarm of harpy things are chasing you)
Avatar
(then she is just taking some hair from the body and throws the head directly after the body is thrown)
Avatar
The soldiers yank the body from your grip as you prepare to take a sample, not willing to wait while the flock closes in. With elated cries and wheeling hunting screams, they descend on the body, tearing it to pieces in a feeding frenzy.
Avatar
"Yeah maybe it's better to just throw it, my bad. Sorry." Jeonia watches the beasts in disgust. "Eating their own kind. That's horrible. But maybe that buys us enough time to get away." Jeonia sits down. Not on the bow like before but somewhere without responsibilities. Hoping that no beast will come to get them. Every few minutes she watches Ikaros but most of the time she is lost in her thoughts.
Avatar
There is a muffled shout as the bandage work comes loose, due to his thrashing. A few hands jump into the mix to try to keep pressure on it
Avatar
The movements around her tear Jeonia out of her thoughts. She takes the bottle and a scale out of her backpack. As she lifts the bottle she calls for Demetrios. "How long until Mytikas? " She holds the bottle up to tell him what she's up to. "I look what I can do, be ready." (Is there anything she can do? Else it's time for cautarization)
Avatar
(I mean she would try to fix the bandages first. But on the skiff, everything would be even harder)
Avatar
"an hour! Maybe a little more!?"
Avatar
Jeonia walks over to Demetrios as fast as she can. "I can try to help. But, but I failed once already. And now the pressure is even higher. His blood is literally on my hands already and it would stay on my hands when he passes away even after washing my hands. I want him to have the highest chance of survival. I am sorry, I would like to be more of a help here. But the highest chance for him to live is to stop his bleeding now, so that a more competent medic can save him when we arrive. I am sorry. I will take full responsibility if this fails. You only need to stop the bleeding you don't need to amputate his arm." It is visible that she is close to crying right now. She puts down the scale to use it as a fire bowl and is about to pour some fuel into it. (edited)
Avatar
(They're not sure where you're going with this, and everyones on high alert watching the flock of monsters, so no one's going to stop you or anything, you can keep going)
Avatar
(So the flock is still following ? Damn) She checks that nobody is actually too close, as she does not want someone to step into the fire and start burning. She pours enough substance into the makeshift fire bowl to heat the tip of a sword, but not too much to prevent an uncontrollable fire in this tense situation. "Demetrios stay ready I'll show you where to put your sword, as soon as it's heated." She ignites the substance and as it starts burning, she signals Demetrios to put his sword into the fire. "Get away from Ikaros we are going to cauterize the wound. One or two of you, please hold him in position." She goes over to Ikaros and shows Demetrios where to put his sword. She kneels at Ikaros side waiting for Demetrios.
Avatar
(Lets get another heal/int here)
Avatar
You hear the hiss and smell the sizzle of the heated blade on meat. The wounded soldier screams and then passes out as the pain becomes too much. Demetrios holds the flaming sword aloft , waving it in the air to try to douse it
Avatar
Jeonia sighs. "Lets hope he will pull through. He will need antibiotics as soon as we arive in Mytikas and proper medical care." She walks over to the still burning scale and kicks it of the skiff. "Now we can concentrate on getting back home and on those flying things." She sits down again, looking at her bloody oily hands. This is my new home? We have so much work to do...

“Hell of a fight?” One asks, looking down at the amount of blood in the cargo bed

Jeonia does not react, instead she walks over to Demetrios and tells him that she will report back to the Vice Regent tomorrow. She says good bye to him, Galmore and Ioanna, with the addition that they will see each other again rather sooner than later. Jeonia jumps off the skiff and goes into the tent and tells the medical stuff what happened to Ikaros and what they tried to save his life. She wishes him luck although he cant hear her as he is currently unconcious. After everything is said and down Jeonia starts to walk home. But ends up walking through the ruins without going anywhere. Caught in her thoughts. She is regretful that she chose to lead the Expedition and coming back with like half a litre of fuel an severly injured Soldier and used up ressources. After three hours of planless walking she ends up before her home under the rock and enters it. She resists the urge to throw her backpack at the wall. She knows that her tools are priceless on Heras. She looks down her clothes and her dirty hands and starts crying for countless minutes. She feels worthless and alone, not up to the task. Crying seamlessly switches over to sleeping. Exhausted from the trip she sleeps for a solid 12 hours, normally she would sleep half of it. When she wakes up and gets herself some water, to drink and to finally clean her hands. She knows that her clothes need cleaning too, but Cole wouldn't mind the blood stained clothes, she hoped. She eats some rest of a ration she had left in her backpack and starts heading towards the Temple. As always she has her Backpack and with it all of her belongings with her. She sees so many people, working hard for a future here, even the children are helping. It was like a new hope for her. She knew that her breaking down won't help anyone. But she was also afraid of the reaction the Vice-Regent would show. The stairs up to the temple were already in sight when she took a deep breath before going upstairs to the temple plateau.

The vice regent is out front of the temple surveying a rock crushing team mixing rubble and chemicals into cement. Their chem stocks look quite low. The foundation of the first ring defensive walls and towers has been laid out but thousands of blocks will need to be laid before it’s anything close to defensible
Avatar
Okay, lets do it. Jeonia gets out the bottle and every guard that tries to block her way is greeted by "Hey there I have a special delivery for Regen Cole and the reports from my expedition." Jeonia did not visit Ikaros this morning before going to Regent Cole, so her mood stays up and she is more likely to convince the Regent that she is up to whatever mission is put in her hands. About thirty meters away from Cole, far enough so, Coles personal guards won't stop Jeonia, she starts to wave. And then she tries to shout in the nicest tone she has "Regent Cole do you have a minute for me, or like five or ten minutes?"
Avatar
"Settle for seven" she smirks, as she and her guard move closer to you. "I saw the skiff come in, you're back sooner than I thought you might be"
Avatar
Instead of the expected harsh tone, Cole seemed to be happy and nice. The smirk pushed away every fear Jeonia had beforehand. "Well yeah about that..." Jeonia scratches her head, "Well it did not go as intended." Jeonia starts to tell everything that happened in way to many details, as usual. As she finishes talking she remembers the Fuel she has with her. "Oh this is the rest of the fuel, that was not used for the cautarization. It burns pretty hot. It could be used to produce better tools so I could start building wind turbines. If the fuel deposit is big enough we could even power a steam engine. But I don't know how much more we can find and I guess no one is going to follow me there, at least not without considerably more firepower." "I am sorry, I am back with empty hands. Except for some Thermites and this puddle of fuel here. I am at a loss here now. I would go again for the fuel, but it could be too much loss for to less gain. My last decisions did not yield the results I wanted them to. So what do you think? If I should go back to helping them" she points towards the rock crushing team, "thats fine too I guess." She looks at Cole with a crumpled face. "Oh, did I make it in seven minutes?"
Avatar
One of her guard deploys some measuring instruments from his vambrace and begins taking samples of the fuel, while his suits internal computer work. It is a suit of power armor, but bulked out for construction and analysis rather than strictly combat. 'Crude oil..." she says ... "well, this solves a fuel problem we were having. I wouldn't want a smithy or weapon shop running on this as is, but refined..." she begins thinking. "We'll establish a camp there. Can you tell me anything else about the local wildlife?'
Avatar
"Those thermites we caught were pretty peaceful it seemed. But they are still big scary insects living in gigantic hills. Those flying beasts are something else though. It took some hits to get the one down. It does not help that it attacked by night and is flying quite fast. They seem to roam in hordes too. I had the feeling they might have a fine nose for blood. But us retreating did make it impossible to test things. If you want to establish a camp there you need to be prepared. If they are only active by night one could maybe find their hiding place by day and get rid of them when they sleep. This might be without honor but also without casualties."
Avatar
"I'm not concerned about honor when our people live in impoverishment. I'll organize a mission to root them out and find their nest. Soldiers this time, not civilians" she agrees
Avatar
"I could go with you, to finish what I started. But I am no soldier, far from it, but I do what I can. If you have something more fitting to do for me, just tell me, or I find something myself." She says, knowing that there is always something to do here.
Avatar
"finish what you began. If I see lights over there tonight, I'll know all of this was worth it:
8:02 PM
(i think it makes sense to divert to that rather than do something totally new right now, lets tidy up those quest lines)
Avatar
(It's what Jeonia would want to do anyway. In the end, it was her expedition from the get go. She just doesn't has the guts to say that to Cole.) "You will see fire, Regent, I promise!" Not knowing how to properly react, she makes a bow to show her gratitude for this chance. "I trust in the abilities of those that stood by my side this last week on both trips. But if you think one of your special teams would be better suited for this mission, that would be okay too. If my assumption is right, they will be sleeping right now. So we either need to gather some crude oil or use grenades or the like we have in our armory. But no matter what option sounds good to you, we would need something faster than the skiff, or else we are too late to do it today and have to releay it to tomorrow. Then we would take the skiff and journey through the night. To light them up tomorrow." (edited)
Avatar
"I'll be sending one of my special units to handle it. We need soldiers, and we can't risk doing anything to ignite the crude coming out of the ground there. Just worry about getting power back, like you promised"
Avatar
"That sounds good to me. Where do I have to go to meet them. I am going with them right? As soon as this is done I can get better tools and start getting some wood and building the first turbines and with them we have our electricity supply back. And as soon as we can refine the oil we could power up a steam engine."
Avatar
(did you want to go with them? I was thinking of sending Eli's squad, but you two should be done around the same time)
Avatar
(Well she would like to be part of this unless there's a chance to get better tools right away. Then heading to the forest to get the needed wood to construct the turbines would be the less dangerous thing to do.)
Avatar
(the tools would be made over the course of a day now that there is better fuel available, as promised)
9:29 PM
(it was never supposed to be more complicated than that)
Avatar
( Well if that's so, then I would prefer the forest. She can proof her worth by bringing electricity back faster,, rather than dying in a fight with beasts.)
Avatar
Why do I insist in getting myself killed? The Regent has her special team, they will be more capable than I am. I should focus on what I am best at and get the electricity sparking as soon as possible. She looks at Cole, regretful of her earlier statement. It's visible that the bravery she showed jusst seconds earlier, is fading already. "Regent, I am sorry my mouth overtook my brain here. I am no Soldier and I would just hinder your special team. I... , I will ask some rubble pushers to come with me to the forest to get some trees. I will build those makeshift wind turbines to get us some energy before we can start building things that produce even more energy. Well, you know the wildlife here seems like it wants to murder us. But..." Before ending that sentence she hears noises from downstairs. "Regent did you hear that? What's going on down there?"
Avatar
(I dont remember writing anything, what are you going on about?)
Avatar
(You said Eli would be going with the special team and tools could be ready in a day. With this information Jeonia would not risk dying to the beasts and rather push on with her goal of building a Wind Turbine. For this she needs tools and some workers to get some trees and build those makeshift turbines. If I just misunderstood we can retcon what I wrote last.)
Avatar
(no, the noises downstairs)

(And the last sentence was just about Cyrus collapsing downstairs and the turmoil this produced)

"But... you know the trees are fine right? There are no reports of trees attacking people are there?" (this is the changed ending of my post then) (edited)
Avatar
"Not that we are aware of. First time for everything though" she says with a slight laugh
Avatar
She smiles and feels way better thanks to the nice tone of this conversation. "I will gather some workers willing to do something else for once. Could you call the Captain and tell him that I am lending myself some of his soldiers again? I guess it would be too risky to go alone with only some workers. And please tell your special team to take care of themselves, those beasts are dangerous. I will report as soon as those turbines are running." Jeonia takes a bows and turns around. She starts to walk away, but after a few meters she stopps abruptly and turns around. "My Regent, do you happen to have an empty Type A Cell with you?"
Avatar
A small thigh compartment on her armor opens up, and one is popped into the air by the ejector slot. She catches it and deftly tosses it to you with the flick of her wrist
Avatar
The tension in Jeonias body and face is widely visible as she tries to catch the Cell. The cell lands save in her hands. Jeonia gets a small screwdriver from her MetaTool and scribes ReCo into it. Then points onto the cell. "This will be the place were the first electricity will be stored. I will bring it back refilled as a gift and as a sign for the beginning of a new time here in Mytikas. Have a nice day my Regent!" She takes a bow again.
Avatar
you are dismissed and head out, COle's permission to handpick your own team issued

Jeonia leaves with a smile in her face and the energy cell in her hands. Every Myrmidon she passes by gets their share of happiness. ReCo: Regent Cole, ReCover, ReConnect. Thats fitting! Her smile and happiness only fade when she gets near the medical tent. She starts to walk slower and then abruptly stops about 10 meters away from the tent. Not expecting the sudden stop, two workers almost crash into her. But Jeonia doesn't even hear them insulting her. She takes a deep breath and goes towards the entrance. But 3 meters away from the tent she just turns and passes by the tent. She was not ready to see if Ikaros was okay again. After a long walk Jeonia reaches the military camp. Her smile is somewhat back again. She know the guards are no fun, so she obeys the protocol and is allowed in. Demetrios is there, as always. He is also Jeonias first stop. She waves her hand as she is approaching him. "Hey there! You look like you got some sleep. Listen, I do need you again and not just you. I guess this time its less dangerous. But you know, it is still a trip with me." She smiles. "Tomorrow I will try to gather some workers. I need trees for the wind turbines. Our new tools will be ready too. I have never been to the forest here, so I don't know how dangerous that will be. So will you and the squad protect of some workers and me?"
Avatar
"I will see if we can get a second squad, just in case, I don't want to do this with just my small fireteam of militia, and we can't expect the Myrmidons themselves to help with something menial like this."
Avatar
"I am afraid, we might need them. Demetrios, about something else. Did you hear about Ikaros? Did he make it? I had no time to visit him yet."
Avatar
"He hasn't woken up yet. He fell quite a ways before he hit the ground, they're not sure if he will have brain damage or not. You did the right thing though, we needed to risk it. It was that, or those things would have eaten him and he would not have had a chance anyway"
Avatar
"While that is true, it still does not feel good. I may not be in charge, but without me you wouldn't have been there. But still there are good news, the stuff we found is indeed crude oil. Some special team will be going there to exterminate the flying beasts and establish an extraction site. Alright then. Meet me with whoever you can mobilize, tomorrow morning at the town square. Without you guys in my back, no one would be following me. Oh and do you think we can borrow the skiff again?" (edited)
Avatar
"To get us out there, and for hauling back whatever we cut down. We're going to spend the march back on foot, so that means probably camping for a night whenever we're done, either on the trail or waiting on site for morning"
1:01 PM
"I personally dont want to risk losing anyone in the dark"
Avatar
"Yeah, most of those workers are first time campers I guess. I can tell you, I am going to do a night watch again. I can't sleep that well anymore, too many bad surprises at night lately. Well, see you tomorrow then Demetrios." Before leaving the military camp, Jeonia walks over to Ioanna to have some small talk. After a nice talk she leaves the camp and walks back to the thinking about asking Galmore to be part of tomorrows trip. In the end she decides against it, as he went through enough with those trips lately and would be needed in the actual construction of those windmills. As relaxing is not a thing you can really do in Mytikas, Jeonia decides to work for the rest of the day. And what would be a better place to go for her then the metalworking shop. She hears the typical cling clong from afar. As she gets closer she starts to smell it too. She walks straight to the one in charge. "Hey, is everything going as planned with the tools or could you need an untrained hand?"
Avatar
"Everything is going as planned. If you're not trained you're just going to get in the way" (edited)
Avatar
Jeonia looks confused as she does not know how to react. "I.. I mean I am good with those stuff. I just never did that before. But you might be right. Not that those tools break or something like that. Just store them here, we will be getting them tomorrow morning. And thank you for your good work." A bit lost she walks to the temple plateau and looks at the city from above looking for a good place for the turbines. And there it was, a bit outside of the outer circle is the perfect place for the turbines. A small hill, close to the city, but not too close. She smiles while she sees imaginary wind turbines going in the distance. She uses the remainder of the day to go over her construction plans for the turbines. Instead of planing for a set number of turbines she is open for anything. She does not know the quality of the wood and if everything works at the first try, construction-wise. She tries to clean herself, as good as some rain water and nothing else can clean her. Afterwards she goes to sleep early. The coming days will be rather hard, she guesses. Sleeping is an issue though, bad dreams and excitement keep her awake Before dawn she already sits on some rubble at the edge of the town square, waiting for Demetrios and watching everything and everyone. Wich is nothing and noone for a while as Mytikas is still asleep.
Avatar
The skiff pulls up to the pile of rubble you're sitting on, full of workers, and two full squads of city militia. A singly Myrmidon in power armor is sitting with them, keeping to himsel,f and the others are maintaining a respectful distance as well
Avatar
Jeonia smiles as she sees the skiff ariving. She is even happy about the fact that Demetrios already gathered the workers. She does not see the Myrmidon on board when she jumps into the skiff from the pile. "Hey Demetrios, great work you already gathered all those people. Gotta greet them all, I guess!" Jeonia greets every single person on the skiff and ends standing besides the Myrmidon and reaches out with your hand. "Hey you. Are you like in charge here? Or are you like, I don't know, a gift from the Regent or something like that? Like, erm, like extra security or something like that? "
Avatar
"Something like that" he says, voice gravely through helmet speakers.
Avatar
"Good to have you with us." She turns around showing her back to the Myrmidon while going towards Demetrios with a confused look on her face. "Demetrios did you get the tools too? If not we need to stop there on our way." She stops pretty close to Demetrios and whispers as silent as she can. "Who is he?"
Avatar
"Special assignment. Keeping us protected in the forest. Remember the meeting? the scout that was captured? there might be more of them out there. We did pick up the tools"
Avatar
"Yeah, I remember. That one guy in the meeting, the nice one. What was his name again? Elysi... No El, El, Elias yes that was his name. He caught the scout. The way he told the story, the scout seemed to be less of a monster and more of a poor tool of some higher power. But well more protection is always good. I am thrilled to see the forest, I just hope there is nothing dangerous behind those trees or high above. But I am ready to gather some wood."
Avatar
The early hour has everyone quiet as the skiff roars south, out of the city gate and then circles the eastern wall, heading north, into the tall grassland. There is not much activity on the plains this early, too late for the nighttime beasts to continue hunting, and too early for the daytime dwellers to begin their own day. The result is an hour where the world seems to be perfectly still but for the buzzing of your skiff, off toward a forest. Trees seem to be sparse on the plains, which is most of the planet, the grove you're about to cut down the only one for tens of kilometers, if not more.
Avatar
Sitting on the bow of the skiff brings back bad memories. But they are washed away by the sheer beauty of the landscape they are passing through. Jeonia just casually looks for dangers but day dreams the rest of the time. The peaceful morning seems to be a joy to most people on the skiff. "Demetrios, the grove we are going to rob of some trees. It's the only forest we have nearby right? We should take care then and only take the best trees for our endeavour. And we should be careful with every sapling we find, possible replanting them somewhere else if they are in our way. We can not risk destroying to much of the grove, even if it reduces our yield. Atleast thats what I think we should do."
Avatar
“Glad you’re thinking about that. It crossed my mind too. Might make a bad situation worse if we are careless now about what we take
Avatar
"That's good. You will tell those workers right? You know I am not good with those leading duties. I am thankful to have you on my side." Jeonia smiles and looks away from Demetrios and at the vast peaceful landscape. "Life is maybe hard right now, but I like it here."
Avatar
“I miss home” he says after a moment. “I wish none of this would have ever happened. Doesn’t do any good though. We are stuck here now”
Avatar
Demetrios statement leaves Jeonia baffled. She was always thinking about how Heras was a second chance for so many people, never realising that there are as many people, who see Heras as the place that ruined their lifes. "I am sorry Demetrios, I never saw it that way. My life before Heras was difficult, to say the least and I wasn't part of anything. My life now is still difficult, but I feel like I am a part of something. Maybe Heras will feel like home for you too someday and not just for you but for anyone. I am not good with something like that, I am sorry." Not knowing how she should react, she pats him on the back. She tries to change the topic. "I guess we are getting closer."
Avatar
"Almost. Lets get the tools handed out, and you might want to tell everyone what you want them to do before we park. Save youself some time"
Avatar
"Oh well, I guess I have to." While greeting everyone was something Jeonia just did, no fear no shyness nothing. But standing there, looking at all those unknown faces, words won't come easy for her. She sorts thoughts and words before she starts speaking, which takes a bit. "Hello. You, erm, you are here to take part in an ambitious project. We... We will be an important part in the construction of vital infrastructure. Out of the trees we are going to fell, we will build wind turbines, simple ones, but they will produce electricity nonetheless." With every sentence, she gets more and more into a talking mood. But still, she either looks at the ground in front of or slightly above everyone. "The grove has only limited supplies and if we plunder all of it, there won't be anything for future uses. So we need to do some forestry today too. If you see some saplings to close together, separate them, so every tree can grow to its full potential. If saplings are in the way when we are felling a tree, get them out and replant them later. Now to what we need. At first look for trees that fell to the ground for whatever reason. If they are not rotten, we can use them for the rotor blades and other parts. For the bases, we need trees I'd say as thick that one person can't completely hug them themselves, but if you need more then two people to reach around the trunk, it is probably too thick. The higher the better of course. And we leave nothing of the trees behind. What we cant use for construction can be used in hearths. Ideally we want 4-5 turbines to start with. This number can be higher or lower depending on what we find." For the first time in all of this, she looks everyone in the eyes. Mostly for her to remember everyone that is with her in this. But also to see that everyone is listening now. "We do have a Mymidon and the militia with us. They are the authority here. Do as they say! We want that wood, but we also want to get back home safe! Any questions?"
Avatar
The plan has been explained well, and they have none. With a whine, the skiff powers down at the edge of the clearing, settling into the long grass. The Myrmidon and the militia jump out, forming a ring around the vehicle, and are looking to secure the area. "CLEAR!" the Mymidon shouts out, after ten minutes of scanning
Avatar
While waiting for the okay, Jeonia scans the forest herself, trying to see if she finds fitting trees from afar. But she has no idea how thick the trees are that she sees. After the "Clear", Jeonia gets of the skiff taking an ax with her. She wants to go in front of the workers but still waits for the militia to lead the way. She turns around to the workers again. "If you are unsure about anything, just ask. And please don't wander off alone. No less than two people should go around together." She goes over to Demetrios. "Let them check out the easily accessible trees. Would you come with me a bit further into the forest? Just to check if the material gets better, worse or doesn't change at all. Maybe we take Ioanna with us too. I just don't like that this planet makes me afraid of things like forests."
Avatar
The militia is organizing into smaller fire teams, trying to ensure there are at least two or three embedded in each group of workers, it seems like they've had sort of the same idea as you. The trees here range in size, and no two are standard. They remind you of thick terran like pines, though the needles are a russet mix of green and brown, rather than a uniformly dark emerald. The trunks themselves almost look like beech, the wood is light, and has an onion like protective skin.
8:30 AM
The tallest is over 50m handily.
Avatar
Jeonia sees a tree that is approximately 20-30m high. It is hard for to really measure it, as it's top isn't visible from the ground due to the branches obstructing the view. "Demetrios could you help me to professionally measure this tree?" Jeonia hugs the tree waiting for Demetrios to do the same.
Avatar
He does the same, and both of your hands together, around opposite sides of the tree, barely touch
Avatar
Jeonia smiles as they touch. What feels like a minute later, she lets loose of his hands. "I, erm, I always wanted to hug a tree like that. Yeah. I think its perfect for what we want to do. We err we should fell this if the falling vector is clear of any saplings and people and the like. I just need to check something. I mean I am no botanist, but before we fell something I want to test something." I don't know what to expect, but I want to see whats under the bark. Jeonia gets out her knife and peels the bark to see the wood under it.
Avatar
There is a brief spray of a crimson sap like juice as your knife blade cuts into the tree, rolling back the bark, so a slick oak like wood underneath. It looks pliable, but strong enough to stand on its own if assembled into something, and not soft like actual terran pine
3:55 PM
It does not dimple easily under the press of your knife
Avatar
"Look at that sap, maybe it's edible. Maybe that could be made into syrup or the like. But I guess that is a thing we can think about sometime in the future. But look at this tree. It looks perfect. Let's clear the path so no one gets hurt and no sapling destroyed before we try to fell that thing." Eager to bring the first tree down, Jeonia looks for the best side the tree could fall down to. Not knowing how to bring it down where she wants it to fall. Saplings are piled up for later replanting. She looks at her group. " Did any of you do this before? I mean I saw it in a few movies but I actually don't know if there is more to it than to hit it from the direction it should fall towards."
Avatar
THat seems to be the only actual information anyone in the group here has at the moment themselves. "Nothing to do but try it and see what happens" Ioanna says after a few moments
Avatar
"Okay, so this will be the first time I am jelling Timber! But before that, lets try out these tools. I hope they are as durable as they said. Oh please don't stand close to me, I don't want to hurt anyone." Jeonia looks at the ax and tries to mirror what she saw in the media. Thinking that it can't be too hard but also nervous that she does it the wrong way. Both hands at the handle and focused she swings the ax. She feels the weight of the ax as it reaches the turning point. With all her strength she lets the ax speed towards the tree. (edited)
Avatar
The blade is well made and thumps into the bark with a satisfying crunch. More of the sap spurts out in a pressurized arc, making it look like its been sunk into flesh, aside from smelling a bit sour, it is not harmful.
Avatar
Like every expedition so far, this too leaves some new dirt on Jeonias clothes. The crimson sap mixes well with the rest of Ikaros dried blood. "Someone, err, no forget what I was beginning to say." Jeonia empties her Waterbottle and tries to fill in some of the liquid for later research. After the bottle is back in her Backpack, she starts hitting the tree again. While everyone can see that she has some fun doing that, it's also fatiguing. After a few hits Jeonia not only sends the ax flying towards the trunk, but also sweat. "How far am I?" she says out of breath.
Avatar
"Not very" Demetreos says, and he quickly begins sorting everyone into a line, everyone taking a few swings before moving to the back
Avatar
Although this was not the answer Jeonia was hoping for, she does not stop smiling, as she has some great fun choping that tree. "Thank you Demetrios, I hope you had some fun watching." She says, still heavily breathing and sweating, but not out of breath anymore. "Demetrios, in the movies, don't they hit the tree from both sides?" (edited)
Avatar
"I think so, not much on one side though. It couldn;t hurt" he agrees
Avatar
"Okay, so let me hit it from the other side then, while you guys continue on this side." Jeonia goes to the other side and chops tree at the same hight as on the other side. "Please tell me if you hear cracking."
Avatar
hairline cracks begin developing around the site of the axe blows to the trunk. "Another swing or two should do it"
Avatar
"May I?"
Avatar
He hands it to you, handle first. "My guest" he offers a somewhat sarcastic bow, and begins getting everyone clear of where its expected to fall
Avatar
Jeonia says "Thank you, thank you " while she tries to act like some noblewoman, but can't keep a serious face and has to laugh. Jeonia positions herself on the side she began hitting the tree. Hoping it will fall in that direction. She looks up and tries to listen to the cracking before swinging the axe first once and then twice. Always ready to run if the tree makes any signs to fall down.
Avatar
The tree begins cracking as you make your second swing and everyone begins to run, as it falls. It trails vines and smaller sticks , raining debris down before it hits with a loud thump that sends all the wildlife in the area scurrying away
Avatar
Jeonia feels the vibration of the shockwave, of the tree hitting the ground, in her legs. She is shaky from the adrenalin. She touches the fallen tree before she turns around to the others. "Yes number one done. Oh I forgot to yell "Timber!". Is everyone okay though?" (edited)
Avatar
Everyone is alright. "We'll get started breaking this down for transit, This is far bigger than the skiff can bring back as it is."
Avatar
"Yeah, I guess there will be some trips back and forth to transport everything we will fell today. But please be precise in breaking it down. It will be harder to build with pieces that don't fit because someone did not take the time needed." After extensively looking at the fallen tree Jeonia goes over to Demetrios. " Well, this is a good tree. But with the rest we get today, we need to organize some regular transport. Do you think you could do that? I will be part of the construction team I guess. And I know you could take care of the transports." (edited)
Avatar
"All we have is the skiff for use today, there arent many type B cells around to get more stuff running. Once we get the power back, we will have more to do."
Avatar
Jeonia looks down and scratches her head while mumbling. A minute later she speaks loud enough so everyone can hear her. "I am sorry. I guess I miscalculated. After breaking this tree into smaller pieces we should go to the others, look at what they have and see what we can fit into the skiff so that we don't cut down more then needed. Then we optimize in a way that we take parts to build the most turbines out of it." She whispers to Demetrios ."The last part sounds good, but won't happen as atleast I have no idea how much we will need in the end. So it will be a bit trial and error. With some luck and skill we get two to three build up, I hope." (edited)
Avatar
"So how many more trees do you think we need to fell?"
Avatar
"I would say two to three depending on how much we get onto the skiff. That should give us enough to work with. And we should be able to get this done in time right?" (edited)
Avatar
(I think what's the easiest way to do this, mission wise, the trees are pretty big, the skiff can take one back at a time, cut into 3 big sections, and we can do the processing thing and organizing stuff back in town later, so itll be 3 trips in total , each carrying a tree)

(That would be the optimal procedure. So getting the trees to Mytikas and then preparing the base of the turbines and getting those up plus constructing the rotors and the actual turbine, putting everything together and voila, Electricity)

"What do you mean by in time? In a day? harvested maybe. Processed, not at all. That's going to take some doing back in the city, and I don't think we can let just anyone help with that. We're going to need some skilled labor"
Avatar
Jeonia doesn't look pleased as Demetrios says that. "You know I am not good with words, don't you? Well, what I wanted to say is, we get to harvest the rest of the trees and cut them into the right pieces before the sun goes down. Tomorrow we will come back with the first tree. The other two should follow in the coming two days. Brought to Mytikas in one-day trips only, no overnight stays. Even if it takes a day longer that way, I don't want to risk anything. With the trees where they are needed, we can begin to bring them into shape and prepare the foundation for the turbines. Of course we need skilled labor for that, but to be honest some simple-minded muscle men can be useful too. And someone needs to make the coils by rolling up the wire I ordered at the metalworking shop. Maybe someone good with words but bad as an engineer." She smiles at Demetrios. "That's my plan. What do you say?"
Avatar
"Alright, same idea as mine then. Glad we are on the same page. Lets get this done" The tree is loaded as EVERYONE picks it up, even the armored myrmidon, and it is broken into three sections with hand tools before loading.
9:54 AM
The skiff strains as its antigravity motor is stressed, but not overloaded, and it begins making its way back to the city at low speed

(will there be an overnight stop or will we reach Mytikas in the evening?)

(you guys wallking will make it by mid evening)

Getting the tree parts to the skiff was exhausting, but the march back to Mytikas brought Jeonia to her limit. She knew that she could not break down. She had the feeling that some people would have liked to see the small woman with her back pack to wave the white flag and surrender to the fatigue. But she didn't. Talking to Demetrios and Ioanna on the way made her think of something else then her sore legs and aching back. Seeing Mytikas on the horizons feels like a second wind for everyone. But Jeonia knew she had some tough talk in front of her. As they reach the destination, the light is already dimming with the sun going down. Jeonia gets onto the first piece of tree that was put on the ground. From the higher position she starts her small speech that she spoke through in her head probably a hundred times on the way to Mytikas. "Thank you, you all, for enduring this trip. In the end, when everything is finished, this will be a new chapter for our city, for our home." She gets out Coles empty energycell and holds it up, visible to all. "I am not good with this, you all know that I guess. The vice regent and the regent, both entrusted me and all of you with this endeavor. I guess everyone of you feels the todays trip in every part of their body. But to Recover from the darkness that we live in and to reconnect everything, I need you all to come with me for another two trips in the coming wo days. When this is done we can start to build thos turbines. I know I do ask for much from you but the sooner we get the wood, the sooner there will be light again. I thank you all, will I see you again tomorrow?" I hope they got my point and I did not end up saying nonsense. Damn those speeches.

THere is no rousing cheer, everyone is far too tired, but you do get the sense they will all be back tomorrow, no matter how sore they are.

The 3 pieces of trunk have been moved to as secure a place as they can be, under militia guard

Knowing that she is no Regent Adonis, with his emotionally moving speeches, she seems still happy with the feeling that she won't be alone tomorrow morning. She says her good nights to the people she knows and all she wants afterwards is to sleep. But before going home, she wants to visit Galmore. She wishes that he might prepare one or two things in the coming two days, so construction can start without delay. "Galmore are you there? I hope you are not asleep already."
Avatar
"No, no" you hear a weary voice from inside "I'm awake. Come in" The apartment is bare, and the ceiling still has a very large hole in it. The famil y next door must have been relocated or found other sections of the ruins to sleep in now, likely disturbed by his late night tinkerings

"Hey, did you get an upgrade or something like that? This is close to be called spacious." Jeonia tries to smile, but is too fatigued to make it a good one. "Don't look at my like that, I know I did not take you with me this time. It is for the greater good. No need to risk you life for some chopping. You are to valuable for Mytikas." Jeonia sits down, with her back at leaning at the wall. "There is something you could do for me. I will be heading out to get more trees in the coming two days. I don't want to have much of a delay after that. So that we can start to work on the turbines three days from now. Could you please get us some skilled labor for this task? And additionally could you make sure that metalworking guys finish the wire by then?" (edited)
Avatar
“The wire was spun today. That part is all done. We just need the wood. Do you want me to have some teams processing the stuff you bring back into planks?”
Avatar
"You would do that? That would be great!" Jeonia gets out her scribbled construction plan. "This is how I planned it, maybe we should get longer rotors though. Oh and could you try to get some strong magnets? If you don't get any, normal iron will do too, I will magnetize it later then. What do you think?"
6:06 AM
Avatar
"It may be some time before more iron comes into the city. there was a mine collapse there last night"
Avatar
"What? Was it an accident? During the Town Hall Meeting, our scout Eli talked about a spy he caught. Coincidence?"
Avatar
"I don't think so. They didn't even approach the city from the same direction. And it wasnt a spy, just a scout"
Avatar
"You are right. I am too tired to remember the facts correctly." Both continue to talk about construction details. Half an hour later Jeonia begins to talk slower and slower until her head lands on her backpack and she starts to sleep.

Avatar
Huh? Oh no I fell asleep. Thank you Galmore. She tries to get up as silent as she can, to not wake Galmore. And then sneaks out. It is still pretty early, but she walks straight to the meeting point to wait for the rest to show up, so they can get tree number two.
Avatar
THe next two days pass largely the same, heading out into the forest, felling a tree as carefully as possible, and then returning home utterly exhausted. Galmore does as promised, leading his teams at home in stripping off bark and making the trunks into planks for your build. Dawn of day 4 as everything but the most recent tree processed, which he plans to do as you begin work on the windmills
Avatar
Jeonia uses a stick to draw the construction plan onto the ground, so everyone can check if they are placing things right. With just basic equipment, she plans to build the whole while it windmill lies on the side on the ground. Pulling it up a bit with the skiff, when the rotor and turbine get put onto the top. And finally when everything is assembled pulling it into position with the lowest part gliding into the holes that then need to be filled with cement. With no magnet she uses her tools to cut 1,5 m long bars out of the railing of the skiff. She magnetizes those with an electromagnetic field produced by wires and her energy cells. Those magnets are essential for the turbines to produce actual energy. As they rotate inside the coils. With wires ending in a makeshift transformer, that has an adapter attached, to fit energy cells, everything should produce electricity as soon as the breaks are loosened. As the first one gets in position Jeonia inserts Coles energy cell.
Avatar
At first nothing happens, there is no breeze. After a few moments of pained looking up , the wind begins to move, and with a groan the various wind catching blades begin to move. There is a slight hum of power, and the first red pip on the energy cell for charge level begins to display
Avatar
After tedious waiting Jeonia looses it after the first pip displays. "We did it!" She screams, jumping up into the air. She hugs everyone she knows and cries as all the pressure she felt just disappears with every Watt the turbine produces. "You all deserve some rest today. We did it! After this energy cell is loaded you are free to charge your own." She says, sobbing with a smile on her face. "Get some rest and tomorrow we will get the other two working." Jeonia walks over and finds Galmore chatting with Demetrios. "Thank you. Both of you. This would never have been possible without you. Thank you."
Avatar
She hugs both of them. "I will go to Vice-Regent Cole as soon as that Energy Cell is loaded and I will recommend both of you for higher duties, if that is okay with you."

(Well, then there is one last trip to Cole. The Lightbringer needs to bring the light after all.) Jeonia leaves the construction site and makes her way to the temple. She holds Coles energy cell in her hand for the entire trip. The face that was full of joy and relief, faded to a more thoughtful one. The temple guards let her enter after recognizing her. She enters the great hall, waiting for Cole. She looks at the big hand of Ares lying on the ground. The throne of Regent Adonis. She is happy that she met both Cole and Cyrus. The waiting for Cole gives her more time to think, about the last month, her experiences and also what she heard about the Regent. She knows that this is no life she wants to live. She is no hero, no leader but that is okay. As Cole enters, Jeonia bows deeply and hands over the energy cell. "I did as I promised, I brought the light back to Mytikas. In the coming two days, two more wind mills will be built. And maybe many more in the time to come. But I won't lead those projects. I can not stand another trip, where my decision can result in life or death for others. I don't want to be a hero. But I am greatful that I could help Mytikas. From now on I will help the engineers to build up basic infrastructure for Mytikas. I will help building a drainage, I will dig holes, I will do as someone else telse me to. I won't be in charge. If you, or the regent ever need me, you can count on me. But I hope that it will only be a plumbing issue or some broken electrical devices. I thank you for all of this! " Jeonia turns around and is about to leave the hall, knowing that she might not enter it again in the foreseeable future. She smiles again as this pressure also reliefs.

Cole Says nothing’ merely taking the cell and placing it in her pistol. You hear the slight buzz as it charges up to full, and she places it back on her belt successfully. The following day Jenoa is awoken by porters outside taking her things and loading them into a wagon. “New orders ma’am. You’ve been promoted to chief engineer in Mytikas”

Outside the city. The windmills turn as they catch a spring breeze
